HELP -Installing Aftermarket Stereo in 2005 JBL Convertible

Postby Grant516 » Fri Aug 28, 2009 11:05 am

Long story short my lovely 2002 Solara Convertible was destroyed by a cab in Manhattan.

I'm trying to put my Kenwood DDX-714 Stereo and Kenwood/Garmin G510 in the car right now.

I purchased all required pieces-

I have the Headunit, the Nav, the peripheral JBL pass-through, the SWI-Jack, and the Metra Trim Piece. Jeez it's a lot of work so far compared to the previous set up.

Issues I'm running into...

#1 - Of The 2 wiresets that goes into the Head Unit, only ONE is standard toyota. That one goes without problem into the JBL pass through, but then the other one I can't plug in. It only contains three pink wires with colored stripes on them...

http://solara.down2thec.com/albums/albu ... .sized.jpg[/img] Do I have to get into where the Amp is behind the glovebox... or what?! My 2002 solara had the two normal jacks on the back, and that was SLE as well.... It was a long time ago though and I removed the amp altoghther, on this one I'd like to keep it... hence buying the pass through.

#2 - After reading the SWI-Jack installer rules, I am still completely in the dark as to what this image is... or even exactly about the installing the resistor. Any help would be appreciated on that.

#3 - The JBL pass through has plugs for Front and Back Left & Right... I also have two wires dangling from my stereo for the Sub.
Is the Sub treated as a back speaker type thing... or will I need to run wires to the sub itself, if that would even work (as I imagine it isn't powered on it's own.)

I've done a lot of searching, but truth be told a LARGE majority of these tutorials link to websites that are down, or posts that the linkage no longer works.

I'll be checking up here throughout the day. Any help will be appreciated. Just trying to get my new(er) solara up to speed.

Thank you much.

The SWI Jack install.

okay... some trial and error and I'll be answering my own questions to aid anyone a little bit who ends up in my shoes.

There is only 1 harness which is used in the JBL system... (rather than 2 for the standard toyota)... curiously the illumination wire is missing from this set-up. This may me a Peripherals Electronics choice and I could tap it from the back of the harness. If anyone knows the wire, do let me know.

The other non-standard shaped jack is for some reason very large despite only having three wires which control the steering interface.

Pin 8 is Pink & Black (looks black, could be seriously dark blue) with Silver Dots, and connects to the White wire with the 560 OHM resistor on it.

Pin 7 Pink & Green with Silver Dots, also connects to the white wire, but more directly (before you splice the resistor in).

Pin 6 Pink & Blue with Silver Dots connects to your harness' ground and of course some grounded point. (could possibly just be ground).

Not 100% sure but it does sound like the amp is still being controlled, though I couldn't tell you for sure.

I have the Metra Silver Dash Kit and while it does match color well, it sticks out a 1/10th of an inch past the Climate Control unit, possibly because of the issue with kenwood units not mounting flush too easily without drilling through metals.
It actually looks alright though since the line just casts a shadow...

Wish me luck with the set up. Hoping all my wiring doesen't continually screw w/ my battery.
