Getting Extra Key Made: Potential Problems?

Postby cspaula » Sat Mar 28, 2009 5:16 am

I want to get an extra key made for my Solara. I also just ordered remotes for keyless entry that I have yet to program. Is getting an extra key made as easy as going to get the key made at a local hardware store? Will I still be able to program the new keyless entry remotes if I get a key made at the hardware store? I am trying to anticipate any potential problems with this process. The new remotes were purchased from Ikeyless and the car is a 2006 SLE. Thanks.

I don't have a gen 2, like you, but a hardware store would be the best place to get a key made. The key teeth are inaccurate and mine sometimes didn't work. I had to go to Toyota to get one made. Just give them your VIN number and they will make an exact replica from their computer. Your key will have a fancy Toyota emblem in it too. Also, if your key has a chip in it Toyota will have to do that, a hardware store cannot do that. Just to warn you, it might be expensive.

My 99 solara has a chip in the key. If you replicate that key in a regular hardware store, you will be able to use it to open the door, but you will not bee able to turn the car on with it.

You need to purchase a key that has a chip in it (assuming yours does), then take it to the hardware store then program it. These keys can be purchased from ebay pretty cheap... You need an original programed key to be able to program a new key.

As for the remote, follow the instructions and you should be ok

The 06 does have a resistor key. As such, they not be purchased just anywhere. Sorry.

yeah transponder keys. When i bought my car used, I had to get a duplicate and a keyless entry as well (I think gen 2 and gen 2.5 all have transponder keys. correct me if i'm wrong?). At the toyota dealership the transponder cost me about 115 for a key. stuff! i bought my keyless entries on amazon and programmed them myself. a lot of door opening and closing... but saved a bankload prolly than if i had gotten them at toyota as well.
