Clearing out the carbon the old-fashioned way

Clearing out the carbon the old-fashioned way

Well, I switched to full synthetic on my last oil change. That was 3 months and 1600 miles ago. I would normally be changing the oil soon to rid the engine of the moisture that accumulates over time, but being synthetic, I can't imagine I really need a change yet. Next best thing- take her out on the highway to really heat things up and burn off moisture (and carbon).

So I ran an errand this morning that took about 20 minutes of city driving. That should be plenty of time time to heat up the coolant AND the oil (which warms up more slowly). I then hopped on the interstate and headed out of town. All of our roads are nice and dry thanks to a 50+ degree day yesterday so I decided to really open up ol' lara.

I've read the 'top speed you've driven in your 'lara' post and people were talking about a speed limiter at 130 or 133 or something. Up until today I took them for their word. If the speedo is to be believed, I had my girl up to 140 and it wasn't done there. I was surprised and delighted as this would have been the only car I'd owned that was governed. For practicality's sake, it really doesn't matter, but I hate looking at a 160mph speedo and knowing that they might as well have just stopped and 135-140.

Anyone ever hit a buck-forty in their Gen2-2.5?
(please don't take this as a call to action!)

Well, it didn't go OVER 140 but it sure seemed to still be accelerating.

Don't get me wrong, I don't make a habit of driving like this. I just like to top-out all my cars at least once. Even if my car can go faster (and I guess I don't really know that it can), I won't bother trying to find out.

I know it's pretty irresponsible to drive at such speeds even on a limited basis. It's also very hard on the engine to leave the hammer down for the length of time required to hit top speed. The temperatures that your cylinder head (specifically the exhaust valve and port) sees are unbelievably high under wide open throttle. Seems to me I remember reading that the exhaust valve can reach over 1500 degrees!

I'm making myself feel guilty now. I must now do 10 hail marys and a wash & wax.

I realized the same thing as you. I thought it was electronically limited to 130, but I had it square on at 140 once. Don't think I'll try it again though.
