The solara ECU has a "Limp home" mode where it won't shift into high gears or rev past around 3,000 RPM to save the engine. I put a dead battery into my car one time cause i thought it was still good and drove down the street to charge it and i went into the same situation.

I put my dad's Z3 in limp home mode once because I left the oil fill cap off and drove it on the highway for 20 minutes. By the end of the trip, it was exhibiting the same symptoms you describe- because it was pretty low on oil.

Obviously there are a lot of reasons a car will go 'limp'.
Good luck in the diagnosis!

pull the battery and reset the ecu. If there really is a problem, it will go into limp home mode again.

You run the risk of doing serious damage to your ride if you drive it with the CEL flashing.
