Extended crank problem

This all started a while ago after my accident, After being forced off the road into a guard rail, a while later I went into a oil change and some tune ups. The dealer ship suggested I can the throttle body, so we did that. Later that week the cel came on, but nothing was out of the norm. when I brought her back in to get it check out, the air throttle valve needed to be replaced, the engine was running lean. So we did that. A few days later the a extended crank problem would come up, I would try to start the car and it would take 3 seconds or more of the engine turning over before she started, some times she took off some times she seemed starved for fuel then caught up and ran fine. This happened as often as every other start and then would stop for a day or two then act up again and then stop. I did track it for two weeks, every start I wrote down what happened, noted the gas tank level, temp out side, time of day and time between starts (I’m an anal engineer), I took the car to the dealer ship twice to get this problem worked on. The mechanic had her for 8 hours one day. Did heat soaks and injector pressure tests, gas line pressure tests and all sorts of fun stuff. After 8 hours of work, he found nothing, so we ran some fuel/injector cleaner through a tank of gas, that did the trick for three days then it acted up again. Luckily my room mates brother is a Toyota Tec, I called him, he works in San Diego, he took my vin number and we had a hour long talk after he did research for a week for me. We came down to resetting the cars computer, take the leads off the battery for a while (I did it for 3 hours, he said 10 to 15 minutes is fine) and thus so far, the problem is fixed, No more extended crank problems!

If you have the problem try resetting your computer an good luck! Don’t trust the dealership all the time, they say they do stuff but some times… they don’t, and some times when they reset stuff, they don’t do what they are supposed to do!

And in between all of that, with many trips to the dealership, and oil changes and work done, they scratched my car!

wow, that seems like you went through a lot. Usualy as a rule of thumb, if you ever get a CEL with our cars, first instinct is to reset the computer. If it comes back again, then you know there is a real problem. But these engines like to get into some funky modes. I usualy reset the engine 4 times a year to have it relearn my summer and winter driving styles.

I know you'll call bullshit, but while reading that I was thinking ECU reset. You changed (cleaned) the air intake path and the ECU tracks and rememebers what it needs to do to find the right mix. I would have thought that the shop would have disconnected the battery for the initial work but I guess not. I disconnect my battery when I clean my cp-e intake filter for just that reason. Like any other computer controlled thing... when it doubt, power out!

Glad you solved it.

I went back to the dealer to get my brakes turned down and new pads, and when I left the shop, the extended crank problem... wow it stated back up... Hum.....

When I went in the time before the person I always deal with, it was her last day, and I told her I was moving to Arkansas, and she said "well I'm glad your moving too, I wont have to worry about you or your car here"

So the Shop in Berry Vermont is Crap! Don't go there!

Well if you mean you "cleaned" by "can" then the dealership ruined your electronic throttle body (you're not supposed to spray carb cleaner/ intake cleaner/ injector cleaner directly onto the electric throttle or it can ruin it) and when the dealership replaced the throttle body they should have reset all dtc codes and possibly reset the ecm/pcm with their scan tool after the repair (proper operating proceedure) just something to think about.....
