Does it smell INSIDE the car, or do you smell it on the OUTSIDE of the car?

Well, you could leave the top down at all times. Ok, not a solution.

Have you checked back in the boot (where the top folds when it's down) to be sure a critter didn't crawl in there in die? Maybe just some damp leaves infiltrated when you put the top down?

If it smells like mold/mildew you'll have to locate the area affected and vacuum/wipe the area thoroughly then treat with a non chlorine bleach or a mold/mildew removing chemical made specifically for colored fabrics.

If the odor is of cherry blossoms in the spring then just hope for more warm weather.

Cheers

Thanks for the reply - Mr MikeL , Gadgetjq.
the smell is both in and out. only 80 deg days and up. On a 90+ deg day , you can walk up to the top and sniff. smells like oily- chemical something
Hard to explain . I never smelled anything like it before. The trunk smells also if that helps. I cleaned the carpets ,changed the filter, disinfected the air fan and ducts, cleaned the leather, wiped down the interior, new mats,
removed everything from trunk and cleaned all. Is there a way to clean the top to change the smell of it?Anything I missed? THANKS AGAIN.

No guarantee this would work or even that it's appropriate but have you thought about trying Febreeze? It's pretty good at eliminating odors in upholstery, carpets and other materials so should work well on your canvass top. There's an automotive version of Febreeze available at most auto supply stores.

Worst case you try it, the Febreeze scent makes you nuts for a few days and the odor comes back. Best case you 'like' the Febreeze odor and it manages to kill the unpleasant odor.

Obviously no substitute for finding the actual 'source' of the odor. For that you might want to try Googling something like "convertible top odor" just to see if anyone else has ever posted a similar experience with any kind of car.

Cheers

It may be your PCV valve. Check this thread, a bunch of us had the same issue.

Did you buy the car used from a dealership? Could it be some of the cleaners & polishes they use?

I would recommend wiping down EVeRYTHING on the inside of the car, taking out the floor mats and vacuuming them with a vigorous vacuum cleaner, then leaving it sit out with the top down on a warm, sunny, breezy day to see if that doesn't reduce or eliminate the odors.

Do you park outside at all? Did the previous owner?

Might be cat piss... that's an issue with converts that are exposed to the little bastards over time. Once they do they keep going back and fouling the area over and over. :-?

I have never considered this. I dont know anything about the other owner.
After reading your reply, went and smelled top. Definately chemically-oilly
smell. The top looks perfect, maybe someone cleaned the top with something not made for tops. Is there any way to deep clean the top to
refresh it?
Thanks for your reply. Beside this problem - I LOVE THIS CAR.

Is it still under any kind of warranty from the dealer you bought it from? Have you taken it back to them for some answers?

Not knowing what the substance is, it would be difficult to know what would neutralize the odor at this point.

Good luck!
