Belt noise

Belt noise

Postby lambition » Sat Jan 06, 2007 9:55 am

My 2004 solara began making squeaking noise early last year, but it went away after the engine warmed up. However, not its making that noise all the time.

Same thing with my mother's 2004 Highlander.

Anyone else experiencing belt squeaking noise ?

Do anyone know if this is covered by powertrain warranty?

It used to do that only when it was cold, but now its making noise all the time.

Its squeaking like some old cars.
I just found a TSB for Accessory drive belt squeal / belt tensioner rattle. I'm guess that is the problem, but I don't know what is warranty term for this (I couldn't get hold of the document itself).

Yea, I have the same noise when the car is first started in the morning after it has been sitting out in the cold for a while. Is this really the belt noise? I'll try to see what I can find in the TSB and ask around...let me know if you find anything.

It could be bearings as well, but I wouldn't know for sure.

I'm guessing its either bearings on pully or tentioner not doing its job causing the belt to slip.

TundraSolution has bunch of TSBs that apply to our cars...and the belt noise is one of them...here's the link to all of them. If you want the details of each TSB though you need to be a paid subscriber.

Took my car to the dealer today.

I told them to fix the noise problem and upgrade ECM program as well.

After about 5 hours of waiting (at home) I finally got call from the dealer only to hear I cannot get the car back today!

Service ref. told me during upgrade something went wrong and fried ECM. :(
I believe it was not really fried, but just lost contents of the flash rom. Anyway, they will be installing new ECM tmr.

Hopefully everything goes well.

Just brought the car back.

They did not find noise problem. I also could not hear any noticible noise.
Hofully its really gone. (which is unlikely. :( )

They have replaced ECM module as well.
They recorded that problem like this.

"FOUND ECM TO BE FAULTY WAS NOT CONTROLING SHIFT PATTERNS AND WILL NOT COMMUNICATE WITH SCAN TOOL
REPLACE ECM TEST DROVE THEN RESCANED COMPUTER ALL GOOD"

I will have to see if shift lag is gone as well. I could not really feel difference while drving back to home cause there were traffic jams.

If the noise becomes really noticible again, I will try to get a good recording and let them hear the noise.

from my experience toyota belts tend to squeak when getting worn. I have used STP Belt Stop-Squeal belt dressing in the past to eliminate or minimize belt noise.
