Tip-Tronic - Always goes to 4th???

Postby Mayor » Thu Jul 20, 2006 6:52 am

Hey guys,

I have a 2004 SLE V6. Anyone ever see this? No matter whether I am at a dead stop, driving 55MPH or just rolling in traffic, anytime I slap the stick over to Tip-Tronic, my gear indicator on the dashboard shows "4" (meaning 4th gear). I can change gears no problem at all - but why wouldnt it start in the gear I am presently in?

Is that a problem?

Thanks,

Mayor

Thats how my 04 V6sle is also. I never use the sport shift mode, so that could by why also. I did try it out once, i was up in 5th gear, came to a stop and the car stayed in 5th gear and I had to shift it down- seems rather pointless to me.

I think its ok, you wouldnt want it to go any lower if you were on the highway and you switched to stick.

I think they make it simple to not add other constraint to slow down the execution of the tranny. The gear displayed is always the higher gear the tranny is allowed to go in. I always do a D to manual mode by doing a down shift in 3rd gear on highway. 3rd gear can go around 90 MPH (140-150 km/h)and I can get good throttle response. You have to manage yourself the gear to get at the better gear for your speed (under 55 MPH in 2nd gear over in 3rd gear)

I don't think I would go 90mph in 3rd gear (or 55 in second), thats gotta be close to redline. If you can't get the throttle response you need in 4th at those speeds, then there is something wrong.

Good throttle reponse, for me, can be done from 4000 RPM and above. I just wanna tell that you can use 2nd gear until 55 MPH and 3 gear until 90 MPH...yeah it's the cut-off or near it. I use D drive for daily drive on highway or when I pass the 40 MPH and I want to be in economic mode. I use the 3rd gear to enter highway at fast pace. Opinon can diverge I think I exploit as best my car tranny.

the shifting respone need 1 sec , 1>2 >3 >4 >5
1 > 33-34 mph
2 > 57, 58 mph
3 > 89 , 90mph
4 > 117 mph
5 > 143 mph

When u at the 3 gear > running 55-57 u can downstift to the 2 gear.
but at the 2 gear , you can downshift until you go under 27 , 28 mph.
I have no idea why this will happen, becoz i tried the top speed of the first gear is near 33and 34 mh

Is not really cut off ,, is only our engine can not goes up any more. or the ecu will let us to goes up, becoz is AUTO . Look at those vtec type R engine can go to 11k rpm

The "sport shift" is really just a logic circuit that applies an upper limit. It won't permit the car to shift to a higher gear if the upper limit is set to 1,2,3,4,5 etc. The sad part is there's no lower limit, so if you put the circuit in 4th and the tranny is in 2nd, it won't actually shift to 4th, it just says that's the highest gear it will permit. Good for downshifting, but it does nothing for upshifting whatsoever. I guess they decided 4th was a safe upper limit when you shift over from D, because there's no reason to limit the transmission from going above 5th in a 5 speed, and 5 on the "sport shift" is just D in a different stick position.

Interesting info about the 1st gear...I never really pay attention to the 1st gear speed limit.

for the cut-off...I always thought it was like an electronics part that keep the RPM under 6200 RPM...

Different engines have different redlines. If the solara's V6 came in a manual would you drive it into the redline just because it let you?

The ecu doesn't let you because overtime it would destroy the engine.

In those cases where you could downshift (and be under redline) but it wont let you, its just because when you downshift you are usually getting ready to accelerate, and if you dropped into the high end of the gear, what would the point be? I admit though, it is dumbed down a lot.

Not many "clutchless" trannies hold gears when upshifting. This prevents stalls, i.e. if you were going 5mph and shifted to 5th, you would stall out.

basically toyota wants to make things idiot-proof...same would apply to their convertible top by disallowing it be opened after 3mph.

I'll tell you what's killer though....the car needs to shift before it hits 60! I bet the 0-60 times would substantially improve if it wasnt for that 2-3 shift before 60!
