Coat over the leather is peeling off.

Coat over the leather is peeling off.

Some sort of coat over the leather on driver side handle (one that holds window and door switches) handle just began peeling off.
It appears to be a protective coat (I might be wrong).

Anyone know why?
How can I fix that problem with out replacing whole thing?

I have that same problem... It got wet a few times from rain coming in (driving with the windows down) and then it bubbled and peeled.. I only have a tiny bit of peeling on the driver's side cuz I touched one of the bubbles and it popped... the passenger's side is still fine though... just bubbles when wet, but I have learned to leave it alone... I have no idea why it did this; it's really annoying...

But yeah, it's some sort of protective rubberized coating... I have no idea how to fix it properly... I've just kept it conditioned and it seems to be fine (and it's hardly noticable). Just don't get into any bad habbits of picking at it...

I have to look at my car, because I don't think I have leather there (not sure). My door gets wet all the time because the convertible top drips in when I have to put the window down. I don't recall having this problem.

I'll look though. It would really anger me.

Either of you under warranty still? Take it in and see if they will fix it.

Thanks for the reply.
Its already pilled off quiet a bit. :(

I will try getting some leather clearner/conditioner to see if it stablizes at least.

I have extended warranty, but I'm pretty sure its not convered by this warranty, cuz it said trims, seats, convertible tops, etc... are exclueded.

Hope that leather doesn't get harden and crack after few years.

It's only one strip of leather on the door and on the armrest so I'm assuming you're talking the armrest. The only trouble with min is the zillion elbow dimples due to the lame padding they put under it. Looks like a fat lady's backside at this point.

Damn! Maybe I haven't had mine long enough to see any of this, but I gotta tell you - LEATHER WON'T DO THAT! So obviously, we're not talking about leather here... just some cheap ass vinyl crap. :o

It's some protective gluish / vinyl coating over the leather (ironically it's probably to protect it from getting wet)...

Leather Coating Peeling

Postby Tyrrellg » Mon Jul 17, 2006 9:48 pm

I just got my Solara a few weeks ago, I took it back to toyota last Friday for the same problem (The Top coat on the leather was peeling off the door) They guy told me it was under warranty as long as it was not tampered with. When I picked my car up at toyota he told me was going to oder me a new leather door piece. So, if your car is under warranty bring it back, it is fixable, you just have to be a little pushy with them to give you a new piece.

PXL, I have an 06, but I have had it since April 2005. I don't have a problem with this, and as a convertible driver, you know how wet the door can get because of the top drip. I'm wondering if it only affects some cars and not all...

Does anyone who this is affecting own an 06?

Here's a thought - is it only affecting a certain model/trim? How about color?

If you're having problems, please state year, model & color - thanks! :)

I assume you mean leather color...prodigy should have dark stone like us. But so far I haven't heard any drop tops complaining.

I noticed mine is peeling as well. It's not leather though, it's the dash type material right below the window switch. I do notice that it's right in the area where my left knee sometimes rubs when I'm driving. I put some dash conditioner on it and that seemed to help for now, but I'll have to be conscious of not letting my knee rub up against it for a while.

I have the dark stone leather interior too, don't see anything strange going on (except that NBC is showing the pilot epidode of Miami Vice right now - SCARY!!)

I do, however, notice that the plastic around the steering wheel controls seems to be yellowing.
