Car Exit Shock?

Car Exit Shock?

Postby RDKamikaze » Sun Jun 04, 2006 4:16 pm

I got my '06 4cyl Solara on Wednesday last week and I've noticed in the past few days that every time I get out of the car and go to shut the door, the door shocks me. It happened for a little bit on my Saturn too but then it went away and none of my other Toyotas shock me upon exit. Does this happen to anybody else and how can I fix it? Should I get a ground wires kit, would that fix it? I was considering getting one anyways, does it void the warranty and are the ebay ones any good (if not, where should I get one)?

Not much you can do about static, although it annoys the hell out of me too.

Get a grounding strap for the undercarriage.

Its your cloth seats. I have never gotten shocked when getting out of my leather seats. Grab ahold of the metal part of the door before you get out, and you'll be fine.

yeah I have cloth on an 04 and I get shocked all the time, it pisses me off but not enough to remember to do anything about it 5 minutes later haha, and it also seems to be dependent on the weather, colder=increased static

The same crap kept happening to me 2. I did some research on the subject and it all depends on the type of shoes and clothing you wear, how dry your skin is, and how humid the air is in your area. I have discovered that it ultimately depends on the type of shoes you wear. I noticed that when I wear dress shoes I get ELECTRICUTED. When I wear boots or casual type footwear, the pain is not as intense. When I wear sneakers or flip-flops I don't get shocked at all. So try changing your shoes and see if that helps.

Ya I noticed that after I got out of my car for church on Sunday that I got attacked by my car more than just pinched. When I wore my socks though when I got home, I didn't get shocked at all. And here in AZ, magnify your shocks by 10 because the air is very hot and dry, leading to dry skin and everyone wears shoes unless they're going to the beach...that we don't have... Anyways, what's a grounding wire for the undercarriage or w/e? How much does it cost and where can I get it, thanks!

I think Jeff was kidding. The chassis is grounded to the electrical system but not to the Earth. This won't help your situation.

You'll see products out there claiming to solve this problem. A couple years ago, when everyone was paranoid the urban stories about static shock igniting gas vapors during fuel fill. These companies came out with wild products to "solve the problem." I have yet to hear of one that works.

I had the same problem. I found a trick searching online, and have used it with success:

Get a couple of fabric softener dryer sheets and rub it over your cloth seats. That'll help a lot. Keep the sheets under your seat and then every so often you'll have to maintain it to keep the static shock down.

Rubber soled shoes and synthetic fabrics will contribute to the shock big time.

I cursed out loud in pain every time I'd close my door and get a Snap Crackle Pop of lightning running through my hand. People probably thought I was a lunatic getting out of the car.

isnt satrun had fiberglass panels? anyway, the shock is also depend on the weather, what kind shoe you wear, and what cloth you are wearing. i seen some antishock keychain in japanese parts stores.
