PLEASE HELP ASAP , so i don't trade it in tomorrow

I just purchased the car two days ago, and i just noticed weird issue:

when i start the car after it has been sitting for 5-6hrs, it idles weird - ti goes 1500rpm - 1300rpm - 1500rpm - 1300rpm every second then it drops to 1000rpm and does the same thing but 1000rpm - 700rpm - 1000rpm every second.... then when its warm it idles normal.

By the way - car runs perfect and drives very nice - i'm not sure if its normal or not but i have no check engine light and it drives extremely nice - i love it, but this concerns me.

Oh yea, when i drive it for first 10 minutes for example if i go down hill 40mph and when i put it in neuteral (its manual) it does 1000rpm-900rpm every second... when i'm in gear - its perfect.

thank you for the replies.

I still have one day to trade it back in in case if i got the poopy one :agrue:
but i really dont want to

Have you done the intake trick from the tutorials? Seems like something is up with your IAC. Doing Doc John's bypass may help.

I think it has a cold start cause it takes about 1-2 min to warm up.

COULD it be caused by dirty air filter?

when I start my car on a very cold day, like on a 30 degrees fahrenheit day, my car has a sound, but after it warms up, it is normal.

I wouldn't let my car idle for 5-6 hrs, that is not a good thing to do, it does nothing but waste gas.

You should take it to the dealer if you are not sure.

That's just when your engine is cold it idles higher to warm up the engine faster. The hovering of RPMs IMO has somethign to do with the alternator, sometimes you'll hear that little click and RPMs changea tiny bit.

Don't worry, your car is normal.

Point it out to the dealer. My '04 has a steady idle whether boosted for cold start or after when warmed up. But I'm V6. Any I4's out there wanna testify? Doesn't seem normal to be hunting like that. If it's an issue it's small no doubt, but make the dealer answer for it anyway.

I have I4 and do that up and down RPM thing when it is cold.
I haven't checked the tachometer, but could tell by the engine sounds goes up and down.
I think as dominoSLEV6 said, it does that to warm up the engine.

no worry and enjoy your solara!
