Death of a Solara

Death of a Solara

Postby sleeper solara » Sat Mar 05, 2005 5:17 am

I must unfortunately report that i have pretty much lost my beloved Solara. I was going on the freeway to get a bite to eat during the rain. In a very gentle left hand curve i hit a puddle and hydroplaned. I spun in a 180 and slammed against the center divider. It was too dark and too dangerous to try and tow her out, so i had to leave her there till morning. Shes stuck in a muddy ditch right now :(

i was just wondering in case this ever happened in the future...was there anything i could have done after i started hydroplaning and spinning?

Sorry to hear that...Hope you are ok. Did the side air bag deploy?

Although I live in the NE I've worked for companies whose headquarters are in CA...San Diego, La Jolla and SF. Over the years I've had the priveledge :-? of driving during the rainy season in CA. For those folks who have never experiened driving in CA, especially during the rainy season, although its not the same as driving on ice, similar conditions occur due to the oil residue that builds up on the roads. It doesn't take very much to loose traction.

Could TRAC have helped him on this one? Or maybe AWD?

Both probably could have helped but only if you were on the accelerator and not on the brakes along with counter steering

I hope you're ok. When you start hydroplaning, there's not much you can do but hold on. In most cases, you can't even counter-steer, you'll just slide wherever the momentum takes you. Just don't slam on the brakes when you hit puddles, because it doesn't take much to start hydroplaning.

in driver's ed they say to lightly tap the brakes and try to gently counter-steer....dunno if this was referring only to non-ABS vehicles...

my parents came down to see me yesterday and took me out to the tow truck yard where my car was at. she looked pretty bad. i have some pictures that i can post if someone would be kind enough to show me how (cough cough michael cough cough). pretty much everything that controls my left front tire just dropped out. and i mean everything...including the tire. all i could take from her was my shift knob my toyota badge from my front grill and my front license plate (the back plate is stuck on my bumper which is somewhere on the the I-5 S). i think my dad and i have pretty much decided not to repair it. not too sure what im gonna do about getting a replacement car. any suggestions? maybe a tC or something. or...man i know im gonna get flamed on this...i might get like a civic or an accord or something. not too sure whats gonna happen now. anyways...yea...just wanted to keep y'all updated. drive safely out there...you never know when something is gonna happen. ive driven in the rain here ever since i got my license...i never thought something like this would happen to me. so be careful out there my solara-driving brethren.

Ahh nothing is totaled. A friend of mine runs a auto repair shop. They take cars that have been rolled and hit hard at all points. Little bit later they look brand new. So just cause its smashed does not mean its toast. Some people with frame machines can do amazing things..

My question is what does the insurance company have to say. You can't decide to total a car out. It's up to the insurance. You can't leave the car in the current condition, unless you want to lose alot of money. You could have the insurance company fix it and then sell it, but then you will have a higher insurance deductible. You need to weigh youroptions here and make the best monetary and safety decision. Good luck to whatever you choose to do. Sorry to hear about the accident.
