Kid in his Scion Xb thought he was cool

Just a quick question for all you Solara owners age 18-30. When your at a red light do kids in their piece of crap cars with mufflers start revving their engine? I've had my '04 since last October(damn, its been almost a year!) and I have to say that every high school kid in a mustang, integra, neon wants to race me or at least attempts to. Personally I think it's pretty funny since most of them have pretty weak 4 cylinders...But what really pissed me off the other day was when some kid in a Scion Xb pulled up next to me and started revving his engine, rolled down his window and asked me what I was pushing under the hood. I told him it was all stock and he replied "oh, i guess it's slow". Now me, knowing that theirs no supercharger yet for the Xb, told him to "go buy a real toyota" and I smoked him.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of kids like that nowadays in U.S. society...Good to hear you taught another one of them unruly kids a lesson.

hahah.. he didn't say all 4cyl r weak.... he meant "weak 4cyl,"
like 1.4L 4cyl.. -_-;; or 1.8L on Scion... that's WEAK 4cyl...
i wouldn't say 2.4L 4cyl on accord/camry/solara... etc r weak engine.
cause japanese companies acutally make 4cyl very powerful... cause that's the primary engine they use in their own country.

lets not get all caught up in the hype shall we? the solara IS slow compared to a lot of v6 sedans and coupes out there. my altima 3.5 se wouldve smoked my solara easy. the solara just looks fast. it may be quick off the line but runs out of steam quick too. and with the throttle response delay it makes it pretty difficult to drive hard. but speed is not why we buy the solara in the first place. we bought it because its a reliable toyota with lots of style and a tight interior for a great price. its the value i went for. i traded in my monster nissan for refinement. im quite happy in my not so fast solara but i would be happier with about 40 or 50 more hp. so the next time some a**hole looks to streetrace you be an adult and dont put innocent pedestrians lives at risk. just tell him to go ruin his own license. to quote my mom..."its all fun until someone gets hurt, now go to bed!"

Amen to that

Amen to that Cablemn.

The Solara is a nice "peppy" car, with plenty of style. Not that it is all show and no go, but it's forte is as a competent cruising machine that will do the long haul without getting winded. Try it on a trip from DC to SC or GA at 85mph and you'll see what I mean. The mods just make it that much more "fun," but not a serious threat to a 350Z, or G35 coupe, or Maxima, etc.

It is a great car, reliable, long lasting, and costs about $15K less than those others.

Sure you can smoke some punk a** in a 4-banger, but you can get just as smoked with just as many better cars than there are 4-bangers. Although many of the 4-bangers cost more than the Solara. Go figure.

And 4-bangers may be strong motors in some applications, but they are generally not as smooth as a 6, and 6 not as smooth as an 8 and so on. The more detonation cycles per rpm, means a smoother ride (intake, compression, detonation, exhaust = 4 stroke) There are 50% more detonation cycles per rpm in a 6 than a 4, so the potential for greater horse power and torque (especially torque) is greater in the 6.

I never thought when I owned my 1966 327 SS V8 that I would be extolling the virtues of a V6. The horror.... :D

Five years ago, 225 hp and 240 lb.-ft. torque was drooled over in any car under $40,000. Now it is "Eh, no big deal."
