Taking the Solara to the track tomorrow, any tips?

I know its not a racecar, but I haven't been to a track in a few years and I need to blow off some steam. Just gave it a fresh wash and wax and inflated the tires up to 39psi for less rolling resistance. I'm curious to see if my best times come from manually shifting, or just leaving it in "D". The humidity sucks here which I know will hurt performance, plus I'm 235lbs so If I'm able to match the 15.0 @94 tested by Road & Track I'll be happy.

I hate to tell you, you won't be anywhere near R/T test.

Plus I would lower the tire pressure in the front, you want better traction.

I'd expect your time to be ~15.5-16

Have fun

actually, you might want to consider lowering your tire pressure for better grip on the launch.

experiment with both.

if you want the absolute best time you can get with what you have, take your seats, spare, and anything else you can take out.

Man, if my car runs anything above a 15.5 I'm gonna be real upset. I used to have a 97 Z24 that went 15.7's and I know the Solara feels faster than that car. I just realized that I have a full gas tank, arrgh. I am gonna be full of excuses if I don't run what I want. Just In case my friend is coming with me who weighs @ 130lbs, so he should be good to knock off another tenth!

Good luck at the track!

Postby michaels artic frost » Thu Sep 16, 2004 5:59 pm

VVTiGuy,

Good luck at the track, I've been meaning to take my ride to the track as well, but I have no racing wheels besides my 17" stock. That's better then me going there with my dubs and trying to race in those...lol.

I can't wait to see the results. I'm projecting you to be 16ish time.

Good luck,

Try using the sportshift and revving up to redline. The shifts are much quicker from the little bit of experience I have in playing around, LOL.

Better use sportshift or else you'll get slow times for sure.

Leave on the last yellow. Lol. Well not quite right on it, but you should be starting to step down on the gas just as it starts to turn off and the green comes on.

Shifts are quicker using sports shift so why do you say don't use it?

Dld post about Gen 2 at the track 15.9 @ 89.6 manual shift

Postby michaels artic frost » Fri Sep 17, 2004 6:16 am

VVTiGuy,

I dug up this old post titled 'Ran the '04 Sport at the 1/4 mile track last night....'

I hope it helps you at the track.

Weedo's best time was 15.9 @ 89.6, best run, shifting manually. His last post was back in April, so I don't know if you can get a hold of him to give you some tips or pointers.

Anyone that said 16ish is dead wrong. Yes, that means you too Mike. I know, because I had a 3000GT that ran 16's and this car is MUCH fatser than that was. trust me. I would predict a 15.5 and below. With the humidity, you may hit 15.6-15.7, but I would be shocked if you got a 16.0 and up. This car is more than capable of mid to low 15.0s with the right driver.

BTW, Mike, if you went to the track with those dubs, you'd still be in the 15's, but higher end because those things are heavy and the rotational mass of those things are brutal. The ideal wheels would be smaller than the stock 17's.

What ever happened to Weedo? He said he'd go back to the track in a few weeks and do another run when his car had more miles and better gas. That was back in April. Never heard any more results out of him.
