It may have an area you were passing or someone elses car. That happens to me with noises and once I drive past a person next to me, I realize it wasn't me. Is this a problem that just came and went or has this been ongoing? If it was a one time occurance that didn't last long, I would attribute it to someone else or just something in the air. The only way your tires you would smell burnt rubber from your tires would be from burning out, screeching hault, or the tire rubbing against the something on the car itself.
