My sunroof is making funny noise when opening on a warm day

My sunroof does the same thing only when it's sitting outside on a warm day. When I leave work in the morning, it's in the garage, the sunroof is fine. Only on warm days, at the beginning of the opening that's when it occurs. When I take it to the shop to have it looked at, it doesn't do it.

Hey Mike,

Funny you have this on the top since I was going to do a search. My sunroof has done the same thing and have had it at the Toyota dealership many times. They replaced the motor and will be replacing the tracks. I just got a call from Toyota stating that the current TSB has been unsuccessful and since it's not harming anything and is just a nuisance, they will file a complaint on my behalf. This seems to be a common occurance and I would recommend anyone with this problem to report any issues to Toyota and have it documented so that if enough people gripe about it, Toyota can find ways of resolving these problems for the future.

For now, just have them document it and just live with it for now. I personally find going to the dealership every week for the same problem more annoying than this rubbing noise. Button it up on Monday and see you at the next oil change. Hell, I've been to Toyota so much I actually earned myself a free oil change by collecting those 5 coupons on the bottom of my receipt!

Mine is much worse when tilting the roof up; it is there when closing or sliding the sunroof, but that is bearable. I really think it is the gasket on the sunroof rubbing something which is why I tried the lubricant - oh well, at least it will be well protected, LOL. My hearing may be damaged due to loud music & movies, but it sounds like it is coming from the passenger side.

I had reported this bout 2-3 months ago and they checked it out and they just lubed it and it still did it the next day. I called again today, and they think that it's the aluminum tracking...well atleast that's what they told me. He did offer to have it looked at, but I was like no that's okay. Perhaps next oil change like mattyboyl said.

My sunroof does the same thing. It is much worse when tilting than when sliding. Took it into the dealer a few weeks ago and the pompous 20-some year old service guy said, "I diagnosed the problem myself and it just needed lubing. It would normally be part of our lubing process at each oil change." My thought? BS! Our two other cars both have sunroofs with 3 and 5 times the mileage my car has, and both sunroofs are as quiet as the day the cars were purchased. Do not give me the "sunroofs need constant lubing" BS. Just another dealer not wanting to figure out the true problem.
Moved on to better things...

I am a tech for a dealer and we are hearing allot of complaints about this (my gen 2 also has this problem) and as posted earlier the tsb does not fix the problem. I have found that the problem is in the cable assy -- the part of the cable assy that the glass bolts to is made of plastic, there is another piece of plastic that runs inside of a slot in the cable assy for the tilt function. So you have plastic on plastic lubricated from the factory with silicone paste -- long story short the silicone lubricant does not work for this application. Through trial and error I found that synthetic caliper grease fixes the problem, it is high temp so it wont run, safe for plastic and rubber. You can wipe the factory lube out apply the caliper grease and the noise instantly goes away! Over the last few weeks we have repaired many this way (including mine) and the problem has not returned. I am sorry for the poor description it is hard to describe. If you remove the sun roof and take a look at the part that the glass bolts to it is easy to see what I am takling about.

Yep, same problem here...only when tilting though, sliding is ok. Also had it lubed at last tune up, no change.

Does the moonroof have to be removed to apply caliper grease?

You will have to remove the moonroof to apply the lube.

This is what we have been using -- well, we buy it in bulk containers but its the same stuff.

I think toyota will bring out another tsb for this issue, they allmost have to. I am going to be in training classes next week so I will ask some of the field guys what they know about this problem. They may have a better solution.
