probably an old wives tale, but let us know if you find a loose spark plug near your car.

sucks for the window though, hope it doesn't mess up 2009 for you.

Its not a wive tale...true and I've seen it happen to a lot of friends.

You have a lot of friends throwing spark plugs at windows?

Jeje, no...they were on the crappy end of the prank!

That sucks dude. But as long as it's hosed, get more closeups without the edges or lines in there. The pics make a cool pattern that could be used in many a photoshop effort.

I know that any type of broken ceramic will shatter a window no problem. You can take a plate, break it and use the pieces a projectiles for a sling shot/wrist rocket.

even the window guy was wtf? and luckily the tint held it all together.

so any other theories before i send this to the xfiles or someone?

I'm gonna still say BB/pellet gun attack. You're not going to find a contact point in all that mess. BB/pellet attacks usually blows out the window but in some instances it shatters the window only to be held in place by the safety film. It looks to me that the only thing holding your glass together right now IS the safety film--I would NOT drive around with it like that, it would leave a big dangerous mess in your back seat if you hit a bump and the whole back window collapses.

Your autoglass reacts totally different than regular house window glass. House window glass shatters mainly at point of contact while the remaining glass that was not hit stays intact, also there will be small and large sharp shards. Autoglass shatters completely throughout no matter where the point of contact was and it will do so in ONLY small fragments--this is on purpose by design. It's called safety glass because it allows easy entry and extraction in case of an accident without the danger of anyone getting cut. Depending on the OEM glass manufacturer, autoglass can break into a cracked sheet held together by film or collapse entirely or both.

Temperature shock is not an option, OEM auto glass can handle temperature flux better than most plastics. Your house windows would crack waaaay before your car window if a massive rapid increase/decrease in environmental temperature occurred (ala the movie "The Day After Tomorrow"). This looks to me as a cause of vandalism. I would highly suspect Quick's parent's caddy was also a target of some punk with a BB/pellet gun.

I tend not to think that its not a bb gun just because of the entire window
reacting like that. all the pieces of glass were pretty consistent and a bb gun would have to spray the window to do that damage. and the fact that anyone is out on the streets that late at night in the low 40s F ( extremely cold in so cal)
with a BB gun doesnt make sense

but then again vandals dont make sense right? whatever it was , Ill never know and life goes on.

thanks for all the input from everyone

and btw i got the window changed out that afternoon.
now I have to get the back tinted again this week.
cheers

Safety glass has stress in the glass, that is why it breaks into all of those pieces.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toughened_glass

BB gun, automatic center punch, spark plug, pointy hammer, whatever. It would not surprise me if this was vandalism. I cannot see how thermal stress would cause this unless you poured boiling water on sub-freezing glass.

A REEEEEAAAAAALLLLLLY big sub-woofer??? Sonic boom? ULF or anomalous seismic activity??? Perhaps a HIGH-FLYING CROW dropped a small pebble from the sky???

I remember one time when I was working "DOKATA" (street worker or construction worker) in Japan as a kid, and we were in a "front-cab" truck, three wide, and as we cruised down the highway at about 100kph and passed under an overpass... all of a sudden, the entire front windshield went BOOOM!!! It was literally like an EXPLOSION, but the concussion hit us, and the glass stayed in place, albeit COMPLETELY spiderweb crackled like that, and we swerved around and over to the side of the road. I got out and climbed on the bumper to check it, and after a few minutes, we THOUGHT we saw a "contact/start" point, but not for sure. We had to KICK it out from inside so we could SEE, and then we drove the rest of the day with ALL THE CRAP in our cap blowing all over the place, eyes squinting, and just HOPED it wouldn't RAIN! Likely a pebble or something from the overpass got "popped" over the edge by a tire or something from the traffic above. Freak accident stuff.

Sorry to hear the loss. Lucky if it's anomalous, and not a deliberate prank, anyway...

I never believe this ceramic piece tale, but I tried it in a 71 chevy nova wrecked in our property and it shattered exactly as in your pic.

Actually the spark plug myth is that the ceramic in the spark plug the one that shatters the glass. When I saw the picture the first thing to come in my mind was when I was like 21 and in revenge to one of my ex I threw a really small piece of the ceramic of a broken spark plug to the rear window of her SUV and it shattered the same exact way. So I assume one of your ex's did this to your car.
