I already did that earlier today and they wanted $80 upfront before they would even look at it. Lame..

I fixed the problem though, there was a short of some wires touching (one including battery) and they overheated and melted together. Thanks for your input though!

How hard is it to install a new ignition, and where can I find instructions on how to do it?

When you disconnect the wires going to the igniton...make sure that you're not just disconnecting the two small harnesses. One is for the light around the key ring, and the other is for the key sense. The harness that you want to disconnect is the one with 6 Thick wires in it. Those are the wires that carry voltage to your ignition system, starter, etc.

Oh nm....I see you've solved it.

I have a similar problem with my 04. When I take the keys out, the car acts as though it's in Accessories 1. The instrument panel would stay lit and the stereo would stay on. My friend who works at Firestone asked around and everyone came to the conclusion that it's a faulty ignition switch. Toyota will, as you said, charge $80 to look at it, and then another $400 for parts & installation. Firestone will do the same job for $225 or something. Carquest has the same part for $85. I recently ordered the part and am waiting for it to come in. As soon as I get some free time, my friend and I are going to install it. If everything goes relatively well, I'll take pictures and try to post up a "how-to."

Why do your Toyota dealerships charge you to look at stuff? I don't get charged and I'm out of warranty.

Maybe it's because I take my car there for service? Dunno, but I have had them check all kinds of stuff since the warranty was up and never was charged for anything. As a matter of fact, they have tightened belts and stuff for free.

And we are talking about one of the stingiest Toyota dealerships in the country!

Toyota of Melbourne always charged me $80 to have the car looked at, no exceptions. :/ Maybe they liked you, lol!

Ditto. o_O Hated these folks too. But considering where Jerry lives, it's probably Universal.
