Being that your newer model Solara DOES have in-wheel sensors, I would think the question is can you put the sensors on a non-OEM rim. Auto manufacturers hate unlicensed aftermarkets biting into their sales and engineering, so the sensors might only mate to your original rim. It would be up to you to experiment and see if the sensors can be used on another rim, unless somebody else has swapped them already. Your idea about using custom wheels without the sensors means having that dreaded TPS light constantly staring at you from the instrument panel, I don't see it affecting normal driving. Take what I said with a little grain of salt and ask a real mechanic.
On a personal note, I think the automanufacturers rushed the government requirement and took a step backwords on putting a sensor in each wheel, they should have expanded the "rotational" method and made it more reliable.
