New wheel pressure sensors

Any issues doing this other then manually checking tire pressure?

Being that your newer model Solara DOES have in-wheel sensors, I would think the question is can you put the sensors on a non-OEM rim. Auto manufacturers hate unlicensed aftermarkets biting into their sales and engineering, so the sensors might only mate to your original rim. It would be up to you to experiment and see if the sensors can be used on another rim, unless somebody else has swapped them already. Your idea about using custom wheels without the sensors means having that dreaded TPS light constantly staring at you from the instrument panel, I don't see it affecting normal driving. Take what I said with a little grain of salt and ask a real mechanic.

On a personal note, I think the automanufacturers rushed the government requirement and took a step backwords on putting a sensor in each wheel, they should have expanded the "rotational" method and made it more reliable.

Sorry about causing confusions and controversy.

My 07 has TPS in the wheels. I am looking at Tire Rack for complete wheel and tire combos. The sensors are expensive and/or I am a cheap ass. Basically I'd rather spent the extra $365 on something else.

Crap....just read the TSB in Gadget's reply and it seems the ID numbers are entered into the ECU and looks for all 5 of them. I assume if the wheels are removed and different sensor are used the ECU wont recognize them and may need to be reprogrammed with the ID numbers. Don't know if that will even work as Toyota is proprietary with stuff. Looks like I have more homework to do.

OK, like this isn't the ONLY thing we haven't talked about already? What's wrong with a new discussion with new ideas from and by new people. Have you ever tried looking at old threads? They go back for years, and when you make a new comment on an old thread it seems stupid sometimes. And then you get old members who say things like, "You're commenting on a thread that's 2 years old." Give a Guy a break. If you can make a clear reference to an old thread by way of a link, that's one thing, but just to say that we've talked about this before, so we don't need to talk about it again is a little bit arrogant, self-righteous, and insensitive. In reality, in everyday conversation, people talk about the same thing all the time, but there is always someone who is hearing it for the first time. jimmm
