Anyways, what's a grounding wire for the undercarriage or w/e? How much does it cost and where can I get it, thanks!

I think Jeff was kidding. The chassis is grounded to the electrical system but not to the Earth. This won't help your situation.

You'll see products out there claiming to solve this problem. A couple years ago, when everyone was paranoid the urban stories about static shock igniting gas vapors during fuel fill. These companies came out with wild products to "solve the problem." I have yet to hear of one that works.

Nothing from urban story....it's a fact ! Don't ever go back in your car during you fill up your car...why do you think they took off the "lock" on the gas handle (up here in Canada...) to avoid people returning in their car and go back touch the handle create a spark...a stupid invisible spark to ignite the fuel vapors...it takes almost nothing to this volatile gas to ignite...be aware

I don't know if this will help, but....

In Japan they have these little keychain "tassles" that look like a small "duster" or "pom-pom" with a small "eyelet" and/or key ring. The tassles are special material that "grounds" or somehow "neutralizes" static. All you do is touch the tassle to an object before you touch it with your hand---> viola! NO SHOCK!

I might try to look it up for you later if I get a chance. I was given one as a gift once, and it worked great. (I don't usually have an issue with static, but once in awhile when it gets dry in the winter...) These things work great on your home door, apt. door, hotel door (notorious for hotel carpet induced static!), etc...

I rarely do this, but if you touch your car key to the keyhole in the door before you actually touch the door, it will discharge through the key and then your fingertip. Not very practical, but it works.

If you have leather, you still have carpeted floors.

First off, I don't have my Saturn anymore (not since June '06, I loved that thing). Anyways, it was for my Solara, just to clarify it with a few ppl (the avatar is my saturn cuz that pic rocks!). Anyways, I don't really have a problem anymore, summer is almost over here (but still 100+) so I stopped getting the shock.

On the tassles, if anyone finds them online link me up! I think that's a great idea and would help during summer a ton. Thanks again for the help, and this is a really old thread.

I was on autopia.org learning to detail my car. I bought some Collinite 845 IW. I W stands for insulator wax. This stuff was created to put on power lines. Well I ordered it for its durability and protection of my paint job but I put some on my door and I don't really get as shocked as I used to. I mean I would get zapped before, now its next to nothing. Good luck.

I've heard of people putting grounding straps on their vehicles to cut on the static attracting dust.

While I can't imagine it would have any real affect on metal, I also can't see what the downside is.

I guess I spoke too soon cause I got zapped again this morning. I think I got in the habit of getting out of the car with my calf touching the foot sill and my foot reaching the ground I don't know but it sure as heck is annoying gettting shock all the time. I put another coat of wax will test it tonight. Maybe I should put some Bounce anti static sheets under my floor mats??

I used to think the same thing but The TV SHow Mythbuster showed it required a very specific air/gas ratio for the vapors to ignite.

^^^ Ya, I saw that one (or one similar). I think they also tested using a cell phone that somehow would ignite it, and it didn't work (obviously). They did blow up a house though later in the episode for fun! :)

Dry weather doesn't help either...we had about 3 months no rain, and static buildup got to me. Or, maybe it was the fact that I stopped working on the manufacturing floor and moved to office work (sucks!) and stopped using ESD shoes...

BTW, why not discharge on your passenger or on a bystander?
