I know what everyone's talking about, I think mine is in the early stages. I think the first thing we have to realize is that it's not leather. Leather is usually "treated" but vinyl (or some derivative) usually gets a "coating" and this is pretty much what I think everyone is seeing as being slowly eroded away. The body oil from your left arm is probably doing more damage to the coating than rain. Vinyl in general is not really age stable; it leeches out stuff to the surface. In my personal professional opinion the eroded covering is more of a porous protectant not a sealant. Because vinyl leeches (volatilizes) out stuff to the surface you really don't want to seal the stuff underneath the coating (it'll look like azz after a month), you actually want it to dissipate out of the surface through the protectant. And being pourous the coating allows body oil and other moisture to seep into the vinyl. But no matter what I think I feel we all agree that the coating is not tough enough. I only have this highly intelligent advice: keep your left arm off the armrest and hang it out the window to gain that awesome farmers tan this summer--chicks that drive camo painted 4x4s will be on you like a tornado on a trailer park.
