I drive a gen 2 solara I4

Hey, I noticed that once before as well. But hasn't happened since then. Maybe it was the gas that I had gotten. It's been fine since I've been going to the same gas station. Perhaps when I was out of town and had to get gas at another gas station. Oh well...

sometimes ive noticed a slight lag before you get your speedburst yeah...

when i'm in a situation where i'm jumping in like that, sometimes i'll go to the auto-stick thing and downshift into 3rd for a bit of a boost

Two things cause it: 1) automatic transmission 2) throttle-by-wire. It is mostly #1.

You can reduce the delay by shifting down 1 or 2 gears using the sportshift mode.

Hey guys...i noticed the same lag....I was reading in the manual and it said that the throttle is not controlled by a wire like the previous models....rather the throttle is controlled digitally now.

I guess that can cause the lag...maybe takes time for it to register before the car realises that you put the pedal to the medal.

Also...is it bad for the car if you downshift alot into sports mode?

I been wanting to use sports mode....but Im waiting til I break 3k miles...then I will mess around with it..in an empty parking lot...hehehe

Well...hope that helps....correct me if Im wrong...but I'm pretty sure I read that in the manual one day when I was really bored.....

Lag

Postby glenb » Wed Jun 23, 2004 9:31 am

I noticed a lag from time to time. My thought is, it is the computer on the throttle-by-wire. This is one thing that Toyota should address. Has anyone contacted Toyota?

that lag you notice is your a/t downshifting into a lower gear to get into a higher powerband, hence giving you more power. but it takes time to shift.

Actually the fact that the trottle is controlled digitally should make the trottle response faster, maybe the downshift is causing the delay...

It is not just the downshift creating the delay. There is sometimes a noticeable delay before the transmission even shifts to a lower gear.

For whatever it's worth, the lag is found in any Toyota or Lexus which shares the same engine as the Solara and I believe in another Toyota engine as well that was used in earlier Camrys.

Our RX300 has the same lag, same engine...and I remember reading a list of Toyota/Lexus vehicles with the same lag on the net somewhere while researching the Solara.
