Solara's Fuel Consumption Accuracy

I've got around 12,000 miles on my 2004 SLE. I typically keep the computer read-out on the average fuel consumption reading. I do about 60% highway driving and 40% city driving. According to the Solara my average fuel consumption was 26.2 miles per gallon. That seemed a bit high for me, so I decided to do the math myself. I drove almost an entire tank (357.2 miles) and burned 15.22 gallons in the process. That comes out to an average 23.5 miles per gallon. So the computer was about three miles per gallon off. I was expecting it to be a little more accurate than that, but I'm not disappointed.

Anyone else check their mileage against the computer? What were your results?

Mine says 21.8 but my calculations say 19.6... But I also think the gas station that I am going to is ripping me off because when I pump at other gas stations I get closer to what the computer says.

My computer is about 4mpg optimistic. Though you all should consider yourselves lucky because in 50/50 driving, I am getting a big 16mpg. On steady highway only, I get about 21 mpg. Dealer, as usual, finds nothing wrong.

Yikes! There had got to be something wrong if you are getting mileage numbers like that! Is it possible to take your car to a different dealer to get a second opinion? If not, get on the phone to Toyota! That gas mileage is unacceptable.

Are you serious? Dats CRAZIE! I better get mine checked. Although mines been okay, but it's always better to be safe than sorry.

Mine is always way off, I don't even look at it anymore, I just set it to the option where it tells you how many miles left til next fillup.

You are all lucky. I do almost all city driving and im lucky if i get 280 miles on a full tank. (280 is the most i ever got its normaly around 260)

I was wondering if the left drift (which was sort of fixed with TSB after 3 visits) is doing anything with my mileage. I still think the steering is a little goofy. I am wondering if getting a 4 wheel alignment might help the mileage. Will let you know if it works. All my local dealers are substandard.

I don't bother with the computer. What counts is # miles driven and # gallons pumped for a fill-up. On a recent trip to Chicago, I got just under 30 MPG for the highway portion of the trip. My city driving varies anywhere from 21 - 24, depending on conditions and types of trips. I consider these excellent numbers and am very happy with it.

i noticed that you are all comparing v6 cars,whats the average for the 4 bangers?

i average about 410 miles per tank and was wondering what others are getting with their 4 cyl. auto or manual.
