When buying your Solara, what other cars did you consider?

This post is to get your impressions on other cars you seriously considered and test drove. Why did you buy the Solara over the others your were considering? What was the overall selling point on the Solara? Basically, what won you over?

When I bought my Solara, I was also looking at the V-6 Accord. I test drove the Solara first and let me tell you, I was more than impressed. I just saw maybe one Solara driving when I was looking in Nov. of '03. When I stepped into the garage where they had a Solara SE Sport and opened the doors, I was taken back. This car had as much as a beautiful interior as it did outside. I loved the seats and the dash layout and the brushed aluminum look. The chrome accents were just enough along with the carbon fiber-like accent pieces to give the interior some class. The sportronic shifter was something I never had the oppurtunity to use before. Nice add-on feature for those who like gadgets. It's almost like driving two cars having two modes of transmissions. The test drive went much better than expected. I was figuring on a usual Camry type ride, but instead had the ride like my dad's $30,000 Grand Marquis. The ride was very cushy, yet tight enough for the driver to know the car is planted on the road. The sound deadening in the interior was like nothing else. You couldn't hear any road noise or the engine for that matter.

Then I visited a Honda dealership where they had a 2003 leftover with 4000 miles trying to sell it as a new car for $26,000 and no less! We are talking no leather and navagation here. So I test drove the car and I must say, there was no competition. The ride was bumpy and choppy. The interior was very plain and did the job without trying to impress. The exterior was not impressive either. It seemed almost as big as a Civic from the outside. The interior space or comfort didn't compete with the Solara. The exterior and interior quality between the two cars just didn't compare in my book.

The Solara has a nice aggressive, sexy look that is distinct from other autos except it's cousins the Lexus ES300 and SC430. The ride was sporty when you pushed it, yet cushy and quiet when cruising. The same with the engine. The whole car in general is sporty when pushed, but luxurious when driven conservatively. Basically a wolf in sheeps clothing.

-2004 Accord Coupe EX-V6

-2002-2003 Lexus IS 300

-Mazda 6 (temporary insanity)

-2004 Acura TSX

The Accord was too bland and I read of too many common problems. Could have purchased one for $2-3,000 less than my Solara though.

The IS 300 was smaller than I wanted though it did have RWD. Interior was a little too sporty and not enough luxury.

Mazda 6 was just as I said-temporary insanity. Decent looking car at a good price but the quality does not compare

Acura TSX was one of my top choices but the lack of torque, 4 cyl. engine, and $27,500 price took it off the list.

The Solara was the highest quality and offered the most bang for the buck, not to mention the nicest engine.

I'll tell you what, I loved the Z at first site and still love it. As jesse mentioned, it has only two seats! I mean, I had a 3000GT which was pretty much a two seater with display backseats, but at least they were there if I wanted to squeez and pry people back there. The Infiniti is a nice option to the Z since it's pretty much it's bigger brother, but the price is more than I could afford. Now, hearing all of the problems with the Z owners, I actually feel lucky and haven't second guessed my purchase yet!

G35 Coupe Auto
-- I thought it was too much money and not as comfortable inside as the Solara. Worse ergonomically too. I still think it looks better on the outside though.

The G35 Coupe is a great looking car from all angles. Have heard of quite a few problems though...

I had a CLK320 Cabriolet on order. It was delayed and the Toyota dealer near me had a convertible coming in so I took it.

Much more room, more features, same power, just a little weak in the handling department.

so far no regrets, and kept $26k in my wallet!

RSX Type S
Nissan Altima
Accord EX V6

I ended up getting the Solara cuz it was love at first site. It wasn't even a car I was considering to buy when I decided to buy a new car but my friend kept insisting me to look at it. Once I did, champagne fell from the sky and angels started singing. And....... I got the shittiest customer service at Acura and Honda.

Like OMG, those were the EXACT other cars I was considering. It really went down to the IS300, Accord, and Solara. The TSX was nothing more then a 4-door RSX to me, but the 4cyl was really a turnoff. Mazda 6 was alright.. its a FordMoCo car, nuff said. The RX-8 was in the picture for awhile. I still dig the IS300 its like the rogue of the Lexus family, I had a gal who was filling up the tank of one the other week compliment my Solara SLE V6. But the fact its a Lexus engine and the SLE features really sold me. All I needed was a test-drive. :)

I went w/ the convertible - the other similar one i looked at was the Eclipse Spyder convertible, but i was dissapointed w/ the radio and trunk space - much more better in the Solara

When I was looking at coupes, the G35 impressed me til I looked it over at the car show - again - no trunk space - I dont think you can squeeze a basketball in there - and for that much money for a car - considering its my only car, I need it to be somewhat practical still.

I also liked the 04 accord 2-drs - theres always a lot of mods that you can do w/ those cars, and the radio has an AUX in too that makes it real easy to work with.

The fact that my windows in my old car hadnt been working right for 3 months, and I was still bitter that when I bought the car, the fuckers had left the sunroof out that I ordered, I was compelled to chase the convertible, and now thats what Ive got.

Yay :D
