Dashboard Rattle

Dashboard Rattle

Postby Buckeyegirl » Thu Jan 01, 2004 7:00 am

I just wondered if anyone is having a rattle coming from the drivers side of the dashboard, and if so what was the cause. My rattle comes from the base of the windsheild on the drivers side. I can't pinpoint where it's coming from, the bubble sensor for the headlights, or the defroster duct, or the left dash speaker. It's worse the colder it is. I need to get it in to the dealer for them to tell me "could not duplicate". :x

Yeah I notice that Last night when i picked the car in the morning, Last night was about 35 degrees and i hear rattling also. I figure the Dash or something in the area was just thawing out.

"fotodad" you stated in your poll that the dealer said your dash rattle was coming from a speaker and the dash had to be removed? I find that a little hard to believe just to remove a speaker. I'm like you, any little rattle drives me crazy. It's also embarrassing when someone wants to go for a ride in your new car and asks "whats that noise". I hope your dealer is wrong about this cause I don't want my dash removed. I went through this with my '02 RAV4 right after I bought it. It was never right after many repeated trips to the dealer to get it fixed, finally I traded it for my Solara cause I couldn't deal with it anymore.

Me too

Postby bigpow » Tue Jan 06, 2004 5:03 pm

I have dash rattle too. (passenger side)
Recently I drove a couple of family friend and it started rattling... I was so embarassed!

I've been avoiding my co-worker's lunch invitation because of the same reason.

Could've been worse... I could've been a salesman... then I would have to rent a car to meet my clients!

Dash Rattle

Postby Trouble1100 » Tue Jan 06, 2004 6:08 pm

Had the car in for the 5000 mile service and had then check for the same noise. The Service Rep advised that they replaced a clip in the area of the speaker and put sound deadening matirial under the speaker.....The car will be in the shop next week and we will have a loaner untill it is corrected Update will follow when we get the car back

Do you think 2004 & 2002 Solara share the same problem?

To my naked eyes;
Interior wise, they're completely different design/material..

i havent had any rattles yet since i live in warmer temps...but this windshield rattling when the temp drops is the same problem that TSX owners have as well...theres no official fix for it in the US but supposingly in Japan they have already release a remedy...heres a thread from acura-tsx.com

I finally got around to making an appointment to get my dash rattle fixed, and the day before I had to take it in I called the service dept. and asked them what was involved in curing this problem. They said they had to remove the dash, so I canceled the appointment. As I stated in my post above, I had this problem with my '02 RAV4, and that's why I got rid of it. My aunt has a '01 Corolla that I drove for 2 weeks with the same rattle in the dash when it's cold.
I just can't seem to get away from rattling dashboards on Toyotas. I really think the quality has gone way down with Toyota and their just selling off their name and past quality history. :(

if the dealer said the dash has to come out to cure a rattling speaker, that's no BS. trust me, dealers will do anything to not remove a dash, the can of worms you could possibly open up is enormous. dash rattles are right up there with sunroof jobs, they both suck.
as for your RAV4, 2002-2004 they've got recurring rattling problems. there are at least 10 different TSB's addressing various dash rattles. most of the fixes involve removing the dash and applying felt to vbarious areas. not fun stuff to work on.

I AGREE 100%.

Toyota has lost me as a customer.
This 04 Solara is my 2nd and last Toyota.

Good luck with other brands whose quality has also come down... Examples are Honda, Acura, Mercedes, etc. Let us know if you find other brands superior (from what I read on other car forums, that will be hard to find).

I consult Consumer Reports for reliability of cars. Their graphs are awesome. Almost all American brands fare poorly. Until Toyota drops in their ratings in Consumer Reports, I'll still buy Toyotas.

Personally I don't think Consumer Reports knows anything about automobiles. This is a company that tests peanut butter one day then cars the next. My husband has owned Hondas since 1987, and never had a problem with any of them, not even a recall. We looked seriously at the Acura TSX before buying the Solara only because the Acura was out of my price range. I know his Honda's dashboards don't rattle in the cold. Heck, Consumer Reports said my '02 Rattletrap4 was a great vehicle, they never asked me for my opinion.
