slight jerkiness when first accelerating.

My gas peddle has a slight area where it is non responsive, then i hit the point where it just takes off suddenly. It seems VERY touchy...I have had the car for a month and figured I'd get used to this, or that it was just normal.
it isn't clunking at all, and is otherwise very smooth. It's a Automatic 2004 SE Sport and has only 17k miles.
Does anyone else have this problem?
