Axle Boot

Postby MCOjerry » Thu Aug 23, 2007 6:21 pm

Ok, so I have been having trouble starting my car. I knew it was probably the battery, but... Took it to the dealer, cuz I only have 189 miles left on the warranty.

Told the lady I thought it was the battery, but please check anything else it could be, since I'm almost out of warranty. She said they are not allowed to do that, so let's just write some complaints down and have them check them all. OK, if that will do it.

So, tech comes back, just as I thought... battery. One of the things she wrote down was oil leak in the driveway. The tech says that my axle boot (what the hell is that?!) needs to be replaced, it must have gotten too hot and it leaked out all the grease. What does this mean?? I asked if this was a common thing, he said he'd only seen it two or three times. I just want to know if this is dangerous, our a sign of things to come.

One of the other thins she wrote down was AC not cold enough... They looked at it, and said it was cold, just not blowing correctly... the air filter was in upside down. They sad the factory installed it wrong... I corrected them, and let them know that THEY were the ones that installed it

Anyway, much to my surprise, the battery was covered under warranty... never thought an item that could wear our would be under the warranty.

The axle thing is covered under the powertrain to 60K...so what is it, and should I be worried!?

Yeah - mine's leaking too, but I gotta fix my front sway bar first or they'll blame it on that.

It's a rubber "boot" that goes over your front axle linkage and is full of grease to keep it lubed up good. ;)

You're lucky to get everything covered while the warranty is still good!

^Hmm... thanx for the info. Is this thing a normal problem with cars (Toyotas)? I have never had this with any other car I have owned.

It is covered up to 60K miles, per the tech, since it's a powertrain component, so you have time.

Not necessarily normal, no. I have had it happen on a Honda and a Nissan in years past as well - but just something that happens when a seal or boot splits.

could just be a tear form something as simple as a rock flying and hitting it. I wouldn't worry about it.

and PXL!!!!!! shame on you! You should get that fixed! If even very little dirt gets in there, it can cause massive problems. Get that fixed!
