RIMS: 19's or 20's?

Postby DigitalMeyham » Sun Mar 05, 2006 10:31 pm

Fellow Gen2 owners,
Aside from the price factor 19in or 20in rims, I would like to know what size you prefer for your Solara (Gen2). I just became a Solara owner just days ago and came across this site with incredible information. As for the car I plan on dropping the car 1.5 in. but at the same time I want to sacrafice some of the comfort the ride offers. Also are there adjustable lowering kits available? Any input is welcome.

Thanks for the reply! I actually did see your ride even before your reply and it was one of my favorites. Does your tires rub at all? Also I would like the link to where you purchase your sprinsg? Thanks again for the info!

How are the roads where you drive most often? That'll probably determine how big you want to go (or, unless you've got lots of money to replace broken rims, or you drive very carefully)...

For that reason alone, I chose 18's...

Roads up in the Bay Area SUCK... I almost ran over a 1 foot deep pothole on the FREEWAY!

I own a gen1, and live in NYC... pothole center of the free world....

On a gen 2, I would stick to 19's being the biggest, 20's would probably work out best in areas like Miami where the roads arent tore up that much at all.

Remember when you go bigger on the wheels, you have to also determine how much meat your rubber carries, so if youre currently running 215 55 17, you may go for a 225 40 19. it will give you 10mm of extra lateral traction, and still maintain some of the stock comfort... to an extent, once you drop profiles on a tire, you increase its ability to corner, due to stiffer sidewalls, but you also lose out on comfort... less meat= harsher bumps. I used the sizes above as an example, dont quote me on that ;)

hope this helps.

and yeah.... Toyochic's ride is hot!... I wanna race her someday on the LIE...lmao

hahaha ur craZy.Sydemoid ur ride is lookin real fly also.I def. agree. Im looking for 225 40 19 tires but hope i still have clearance and wont rub since im dropped and that's a fatter tire.I def. wish i had more tire on my 19s but thats the consequences u get for makin ur ride look good!

I really is a matter of looks vs function.

I'd personally prefer function over looks since I'm more about performance than sex appeal (hell - I'm too old for that anyway!) ;)

I have decided I'd probably not go any higher than 18" rims so I can maintain a 50 sidewall that will hold up in hard cornering and overal ride and performance. If I put 235/50/18s on my ride, it will be very close to the stock diameter as well, which will keep my speedo fairly normal.

I've talked to several people who have had 45 sidewalls and less and they've stated that they wish they had more for not only the ride, but for fear of popping a bead on hard cornering.

But if its more show than go you're into, then cram some 20" rims under there and paint on some 205/35/20s. Just hope you're not driving it off a gymnasium floor surface! ;)
