Terrible paint on hood

Terrible paint on hood

Postby silversurfer220 » Sun Oct 23, 2005 7:45 pm

My 04 Solara has a zillion chips on the hood, and from what I have heard, it is pretty common problem with our cars. Has anyone complained to the dealership about this yet? I know that chips are a normal part of driving, but I have never had so many chips as I have now on this car after 1 year of ownership, and my car hardly ever goes anywhere- it only has 9700 miles on it. I am thinking about putting it on my list of things to complain about, but I'm not sure if I'll get anywhere with it. Just wondering if anyone has had any luck getting this problem fixed. Thanks

I've experienced the same stuff bro, I completely know where you're comming from...

It's prolly got a lot to do with moving away from multiple layers of paint in favor of a couple layers of paint with a couple layers of clear coat over it... My '93 Celica with 190K on it didn't have as many chips on the front as my '04 Solara with 20K... I drive no differently than I ever have, and I still live in the same area... so with those factors aside I assume it's the clear coat issue.. Looks good when it's fresh, but it's terrible for durability!

I've heard many manufacturers are now using paint that more easily chips than in the past. This is because of environmental laws that forbid oil based paint. All the new paints even on Mercedes are water based that chip way more easily. You'll see complaints on every forum. Luckily I don't have a ton of chips so far but more than I wanted to see. The best thing to do is get a clear bra when you get a new car these days I'm convinced.

After having my 2006 for just ONE week i called up the dealership to complain about this. Its a spankin new car,I wont put up with little chips all over the car. The dealership took care of it by putting TOUCH UP paint.ehh, not the best, but i dont have to stare at the chips.I had to get the chips fixed on top of my right fender, top right of my back bumper, and top of my fender. They said its not the dealerships fault, wherever they manufactured the car its there fault.either way, the warranty covers it and got it fixed.

Since when does paint warranty cover just touching up and not repainting? Did you make a fuss over that fix? I can't believe they did such a great job on touching up that you'd not notice it much and would be satisfied. Sure sounds like a repainting might have been in order since it was many chips in only one week. That should only happen if you were close to a truck letting out sand or there was a lot of sand and small rocks on the road.

you could always go with a carbon hood. do they make those for gen 2's? depending on the direction youre going to mod your car, if at all, its a nice alternative. i drive a 99 and barely have any on my hood/bumper.

To be honest with you, they were the littlest chips in the most random spots.I was not happy with the little chips ofcourse that why i went to complain & i wanted to use the warranty to my advantage since i paid for it.I didnt expect them to repaint the whole thing since it was on the outter part of the side skirt and other places on the car. it wasnt smack in the middle of the side skirt. If it was something major hell yea i wouldve been mad if they didnt repaint the whole thing.I shouldve took pix, but for the small nicks repainting the whole thing i dont even think would be worth it. If i decide to sell my car also, repainting everything would depreciate the value of my car.
