Driving w/o Parking/Signal Lights On?

Driving w/o Parking/Signal Lights On?

Postby cklinh » Sun Jan 09, 2005 8:48 pm

Is it possible to do this on a Gen 2?

http://www.zer0.info/solaraguy/viewtopic.php?t=8656

Just got the Nokya Arctic White Bulbs (thanks DocJohn!) and was wondering if it's possible to NOT have the signal lights on while driving (they'd still come on when signalling)...

Just thought it might be a good look...

Was looking into getting white bulbs for the signal lights, but I read (on this forum) that it's illegal to have only white signal lights if you don't have any other amber signal lights (like side markers)...

if you have a dual fillament bulb, just figure out which tab (at the bottom on the bulb, some people also refer to this as the nipple of the bulb)..just figure out which one to electric tape it...thats what i did on mine..but i did't like how it looked...(have it like that on my camry tho).

the bad thing

The bad thing about this is that you have no side lights, and you will get t-boned at night.

I believe the signal light is a 3457 bulb... does that mean anything?

and as for the t-boning... I think the Gen 2 Lights wrap around enough to be visible from the side :) there's also that orange reflector in front...

Yikes

Postby mmcdonald » Mon Jan 10, 2005 12:59 pm

Well, I am not taking any chances with a black ride.

I guess it looks okay, but why are ppl trying to get rid of their lights or make them all white?

I didn't even know it was JDM... nor do I understand why everyone goes crazy over JDM stuff...

I just thought it might look good since I changed to the Nokya headlights.

To each their own...

Help me out here, fashion statement? "Look, I removed my amber lenses. Now no one can tell which direction I'm going. Lookit me!" That sort of thing?

playing devil's advocate... why would you need amber lenses to tell which way a car is going? shouldn't it be pretty obvious by the orientation of the HEADlights and the TAILlights? (even from a side view...)

Again the JDM philosophy! Camrys back home come with clear conrners, Well the corners are not lighted by dual fillament bulbs, they are just single fillament, and are used for indication only. The headlight itself emits a low bulb wattage (for parking ligthts) and the usual wattage for running lights. Meaning, normal running lights do not emit ambers in the corners (cus they are only lit during indication). Not wanting to attack your baseless theory..but if no one could tell which direction people were going, Asian specifications should have changed. Regardless, if people were that stupid...then the world would have ended many moons ago!

We're just trying to be a little different.

Ah, a discussion...

Postby mmcdonald » Wed Jan 12, 2005 5:40 am

Well, the reason there are side lights is so that traffic approaching from the side... will know which way you are going. Red means the back of the car, and amber means the front, generally. In the late 1960's, red and amber side lights were put on the sides of cars to prevent t-bone accidents.

Even with headlights on, the orientation of the beam is such that if it is not shining directly in your eyes, it may be difficult for most other drivers (those are the ones you need to worry about) to see you in an intersection (that is the time you need to worry about them.)

Even if they can see you, and even if you are moving, it will be difficult for them to tell which direction you are going, and, more importantly, if they are driving between two cars (two sets of white lights = two sets of headlights) or driving at the side of one car (amber in front, red in back).

Anyway, and this is personal, I don't get it. It looks like your lenses fell out, or that your car was damaged in an accident and you haven't gotten around to replacing the lenses.

Of course, that's just my opinion. And opinions are like noses: everyone has one, and they all smell.

Yea but in order for them to t bone you:
1) They are not paying attention to signs or looking left and right.
2) They don't have their Headlights on
3) they should notice a 3000lbs moving object w/ lights
4) They are idiots
5) If you can't tell from front to back, you shouldn't be driving

Well then, when some bonehead does t-bone you, I guess you will at least be able enjoy a sense of intellectual superiority. :o

That should comfort you during your convalescence ... if you live.

But you are assuming that the only reason you get T-Boned is because you don't have amber lights.

Everyone else is contending that that idiot would have T-Boned you whether you have the amber lights or not...

But, as I said before, to each his own...
