Nav Software Update

Nav Software Update

Postby crimson blades » Mon Nov 29, 2004 7:51 pm

I just recieved a letter from Toyota about what they call anomalies in the map details of the nav system. They are offering a one time free upgrade anytime between now and 12-31-05. This is for 2004 through early 2005 models. Does anyone know how often they update the map database software? I'm thinking I would like to wait until I can get the latest version possible before the expiration date, but I don't want to drive around with it wrong any longer than I need to either. I know I have found several mistakes in it in only 3 months of driving.

Thanks for any help.

Wow, I didn't get this letter and I'd like to get a free upgrade for sure. I haven't noticed any "anomolies" but I see that road changes in the last one or two years are not reflected in my map details. It seems like every year's DVD has road details a year old. What kinds of mistakes are you seeing?

I noticed that it had the wrong exit information for a US highway, the street names were off by one exit. It also has some streets that don't exist in it and streets with no names. These are just database things I have found. Sometimes its fun to see how the Nav portion routes you, it makes you wonder why it would pick the streets it does.

DVD Nav disk- Free upgrade

Postby mikei » Tue Dec 07, 2004 10:24 pm

If you already have a 4.2 disk ( the small number on the bottom of the disk) you have the replacement disk and this does not apply to you.

If in doubt ask your dealer only certain V.I.N.s qualify for the upgrade that is why everyone did not get the letter.

I hope this helps.

Just received my notification in the mail this week (2005 purchased the end of August). The procdure to update the software requires you to take it to the dealer. It takes appx 1 hour. Anyone know this requires dealer intervention and why it takes a hour? I would be surprised if it requires manual calibration.

Thoughts?

I took mine to the dealer last week and he told me they also replace the NAV unit, plus you get the new software. According to my service ticket it says "Software Navigation System Upgrade"

Slingshot...no charge for this due to a defect in the software/system. Not sure what the cost is if you want to upgrade.

They shouldn't have to replace any hardware. All this involves is ejecting the old map disc and putting in the new map disc (takes about 2 minutes).

I took my car in today and they did the upgrade. No, they didn't replace the hardware, but neither did they just pop-in the CD. On my ticket is says Perform Special Service Campaign. SOP, is here, NAV Software Update. It took them about an 1 hr. so, I think it's more than just putting in the new Map software.

If it was just inserting the map dvd, which I could have done, then why did my ticket indicate that an SOP is needed to do the upgrade?

Did you actually watch them perform the service? I can guarantee that the only thing they need to do is replace the map DVD, and probably check to see that it is working. Knowing how slow some dealers are, I'm sure the '1 hour' includes a lot of buffer time to prevent angry customers.

No, I didn't watch them. Even the recall notice said it would take about an hour. Anyway, the version that pops now for the map system is 4.2.

just did my upgrade

Postby entheos » Thu Dec 30, 2004 6:11 pm

I just went in and did my nav upgrade this morning. It didnt take that long at all. I just had enough time to sit down and read the first to pages of the news paper and that was it. Maybe 20 min. They did keep the old dvd though. Upgrade was soft only not hardware.

I finally got my letter in the mail. I'm wondering if I should just do it now or wait as long as possible to perhaps get the next year's DVD with even newer streets on it. By December 2005 you'd think they'd have the DVD's for the 2006 models and they should be more recent than the DVD's available right now. I doubt version 1.42 will still be the version next December. Anyone else thinking the same as me on this?
