The rotten egg smell only seems to happen sometimes when you accelerate and lasts a short time so sniffing around won't detect anything. Repeated accelerations doesn't seem to bring it back. It doesn't happen to me every day, only once in a long while. Wierd. You'd easily smell it when driving for the short time it happens if your catalytic converter does it.

They had the same problem with the 03 Corollas. I stopped using Shell gas and the problem was solved. Supposedly it had to do something with the sulphur content...

LMAO...hahaa. Good point slingshot... :drinking:

I apologize if I was wrong, but I think that all of these topics are referring to a related issue if not the same thing. The exhaust has a sulfur-like or rotten egg odour but only when you floor it. :-? Check out the link below:

My day has come!

Anyways, I brought this up with the dealership. Apparantly the catalytic converter is so effecient it produces this smell. Frankly, I wish the thing was a little less effecient. He suggested changing gasses, as many stations put sulpher in their gas to winterize it (and save money). I've used "Plus" gas from Exxon, BP, Shell, you name it. Problem doesn't go away. Oh, and you aren't the only person smelling it. The smell is actually outside of the car, which is why it is strongest when stopped. It seeps in through open windows and the AC if it is venting. Also, everyone around you will be smelling your nasty car and hate you for it. Whenever friends follow me somewhere, they always complain about the terrible odor they smelled the whole trip. So, your car is actually emitting this smell as you drive. You simply don't smell it. Sucks for everyone else! Nice job Toyota!
