Replacing my headunit...

Replacing my headunit...

Postby biggie » Tue Dec 16, 2003 5:04 pm

Has anyone changed their headunit on the '04 Solara yet? I have a few questions and if anyone could possibly help me out that would be great. I just got offered an excellent buy on the Pioneer 50x4 7" lcd with a built in DVD player (the Pioneer site says it's $1900 US but that seems a little high). I was just wondering a few things about it. First of all, if I had it installed, would I still be able to use my steering wheel audio controls? Could I hook the new headunit up to my stock 6-cd stacker or would I need to buy a new one? Would it play DVD's straight out of the box or would I need any extra equipment like an FM modulator? Could I connect subs to it in the future?

If you got it installed at a good place they should be able to re-wire the harness so that you can use your steering wheel controls. Your stock CD Changer should have the same connections that are used on aftermarket decks as used on the stock headunit. If it's a DVD player then it will play DVD's right out of the box(given it has a dvd slot). Most aftermarket decks come with a sub-out outlet/inlet which you could use RCA cables to hook up a mono-block amp thenrun your sub.

The 04 Solaras have that custom dash headunit, so until Toyota releases a dash kit, I don't think it will be possible for anyone to replace this. Hopefully they will make a nice looking kit so the brushed metal theme is the same, and not some nasty wood paneling contraption.

BTW, the MSRP on Pioneer's website is typically 20-40% higher then what you'll find in the stores or online, Pioneer just tends to mark up their MSRP's (as most companies do). I'm sure you'll be able to find that model several hundreds less online.

I'd like to replace my "head unit," too.

Man, I hope my wife didn't hear me say that!

Sorry, I couldn't resist! :D
