Lugnuts

Postby KSolara » Sun Nov 22, 2009 9:47 pm

so the plastic things covering the lugnuts became a bit loose.. nothing serious but they rattle every time i go thru any bumps
has anyone replaced theirs? if so, I imagine the OEMs are unreasonably expensive. are there any aftermarket ones you would recommend?
I dont kno much about them. are they car specific or do they have some sort of standard format?
I figured someone posted something about em before but i couldnt get anything from the search... if anyone finds something about em I would appreciate you pointing me in the right direction.. sry for the inconvinience

Can you post a pic of exactly what you are refering to? I haven't seen any oem lugs with plastic covers.

I think this is what he is referring to. The center cap of your wheel.

^^^That's a Gen 1 wheel, which explains the confusion (wrong section). Man, I never realized you Gen 1'ers had to remove a center cap to access the lugs--that's gotta suck in emergency situations.

Edit--Wait! He has an '04, now I'm really confused!

You could get replacement lug nuts from McGard that you can use on your factory wheels. They are solid and have a lifetime finish guarantee. They will run you about $90.
Check out the McGard website, they have a design that will work.
Trust me, I'm a technician.

Okay, now I'm getting it. I came across this before in a rental car that picked up a flat. I'm on the side of a freeway in the middle of a rainstorm and those frikken covers had me saying "WTF!" Til this day I can't figure out the logic of putting plastic over a metal on a lugnut. If the size is altered then try using a U.S. socket instead of metric. It's worth getting closed-ended nuts rather than the standard replacement open-ended ones to prevent the nut from permanently attaching to the lug due to rust and dirt.
