Transmission going bad?

Transmission going bad?

Postby NightRider » Sun Jan 18, 2009 2:08 pm

2004 Solara SLE w/ Injen Short Ram

On my way home from breakfast I noticed my RPM meter staying at 3k rpms I thought i was in "M" mode, but I wasn't. So I let off the gas for a second and it switched to the next gear. So basically while I was in "D" mode on my car my transmission stuck and didn't shift gears on its own.

This is the first time this has ever happened, the last time i got my oil changed they said my transmission fluid may need attention. They said it was a bit dirty. So next time in about 1.5K i get my oil changed and have them do the transmission fluid. I hope this is the last time my transmission does this. So I am bit worried that my car did this.

What do you all think?

i think you should be fine these transmissions are built to last if used properly and maintained the right way.

its happened to me a few times actually...maybe i need to flush my tranny again.

ill drive and i left off the gas pedal for a slight second then it normally switches gears but instead it stays in the same gear and goes into higher rpms..ill talk to my toyota mechanic and see what he says..oil change is due soon anyways

This is a bit of a shot in the dark, but you may want to verify that you don't have dragging brakes (emergency and regular). A stuck caliper will make the car behave as if it is 'heavier' or harder to propel. This will make the transmission hold onto gears longer and prevent lockup of the torque converter in extreme cases. I admit that this scenario is less likely with disc brakes than drums, but it is something I have personally experienced.

Having discolored ATF is a worrying symptom, but I wanted to present another less costly possibility than tranny trouble. Good luck!

I've personally had a stuck disc caliper in the rear on my toyota celica clone i had from 2002 to 2005; this stuff does indeed happen, especially in cold climate and when anti-ice agents are heavily used on the roads. But all it gave me was uneven brake pad wear (it would wear diagonally), and that was it. I'd still suggest checking transmission first.

Your probably right. I was feeling overly optimistic when I wrote my reply!
