Dry place to mount in the engine compartment

Dry place to mount in the engine compartment

Postby BadAngel » Tue Jan 13, 2009 10:07 pm

Okay this is a bit of an odd question, but im a Volunteer fire fighter and im adding strobe lights to my headlights. I really would rather mount the control box for the strobes in the engine compartment somewhere, as this would make wiring SO MUCH easier... i already have way too many wires coming into the car and i don't want to add another two if i don't have to... Anyway, the control box doesn't seem particularly water resistant, as there are no rubber grommets sealing it up or anything... So, is there a place anyone would recommend mounting this inside the engine compartment that would keep it from getting soaked?

If it's anything like a typical ballast you could try potting it with some potting compound to make it water/heat/shock resistant. That way you could mount it anywhere without worry.

(K)'s idea would be your best bet. That way for whatever strange reason you do mount it in a spot that doesnt get wet and it does get wet your covered. I take it you will be posting some pics/vids of your finished work. :D

Maybe something along these lines: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5bXc21Vjwo

So you want strobes or they want you to install them in your car? They don't give you a car to take to the sites? Do they really make you take your personal car? Volunteer or not.

I want to put strobes in my personal vehicle. They don't require any lights or anything in your car, you can chooses to put one in and its considered a courtesy light, which means people DON'T have to get out of your way, but can if they choose to (most do) the lights do not give you any rights to pass vehicles that have not pulled over for you, run stop signs or red lights, go on the wrong side of the road, etc... We don't respond to the scene with our own personal vehicles, we respond to the fire house, get our gear, and hop on a fire truck. They do give the chief's cars to respond in however.

and i have the strobes, i meant does anyone have a recommendation for a potting compound? sorry for the bad communication on my end haha.

I like the MG Chemicals potting compound

http://www.mgchemicals.com/products/832c.html

They have a whole line of stuff that's more costly but work wonders.

But all in all I think ebay stuff works just as well for your application. Ebay stuff is pricey too, but you get a good amount of it compared to the MG stuff.

Oh. I was just curious. I guess I don't see the point in putting strobes in your car if you don't get to take your car to the scene. Unless you just want them lol. Good luck with your search.

^^ You don't understand how the volunteer FD works.

You get a call/page or in smaller communities like where I grew up, a loud air raid siren went off and you could hear it for miles around. You respond when you're able to and show up at the firehouse like he said. Grab your gear and get on the truck if you make it in time.

It's not always like it is in the movies or on TV. ;)

if you still need an idea, try Plastidip. It comes in spray form.

Its kind of the same here. Theres alot of Vol. Firefighters around here and they all put wig wags and light bars, etc. on their personal vehicles.

People usually pull over for them.

well there arent any buttons or knobs, its just a plain box with a hot and a cold going in, and two sets of strobe wires coming out... that should work perfectly actually... thanks alot!
