Now was in my car the other day and just noticed something, I dont hear any kind of tones in my car. now forgive me as im new to the toyota scene and always drove gm cars.

but door open when key on..no tones..
head lights left on..no tones
seatbelt...no tones.

also notice that you cant even hear the blinker..now is it supposed to be that way or is there a way to turn on and off these tones..like there is in the chevy tb

uhh i have an 04 sle.... the blinkers are really quiet, and the door only makes noise if you have the key in the ignition turned to aux and the door open... headlights will shut off automatically after your lock it, or u can click it twice and it will lock and the lights will turn off... the seatbelt makes no noise, but there's a little red idiot light in the bottom left of your gauge cluster for driver, and one in the third gauge to the left above the center console for the passenger seat.

Not sure about the lower trim cars, but the SLE's like ours have auto lights which shut off (for my gen 1) when I open the door, regardless if the switch is on or not...fogs too. As far as the seat belt sound...doesn't exist. Also as stated above the key sound...dings if in igniton and driver side is open, dings in AUX and dings for about 8 seconds in ON position. Sounds like the gen 2 is the same as gen 1.

Hope we could be of some help, and oh yea...welcome to the "Toyota Scene" and to SG 8)

It seems Toyota chooses to treat drivers as adults while GM has a tone for everything (leave your blinkers on too long and the car 'dings' ya, right?)

While there are many functions you can change in your car (switch the alarm system from passive to active, change whether the doors lock/unlock as you move the gearshift lever in and out of gear etc) turning warning chimes on/off isn't one of them. There is one sound you can enable/disable. The alarm chirp you hear when you lock the doors and turn the alarm on with your keyfob can be turned on/off. Instructions are in your owners manual. As with so many things that chirp is a matter of personal preference. I have mine turned off while my wife depends on it for assurance she really has locked the door.

Your headlights will shut off automatically after 30 seconds (just leave the switch in 'auto') or when you press the 'lock' button on your keyfob twice so no warning necessary there. You have a blinking red light on the dash to remind you to fasten the belt so no tone needed there. You'll find there 'is' an annoying bell if you open the drivers door with the engine off with the key in the ignition even though you can't lock the door until the key is removed. Even Toyota, apparently, figures 'some' people will need a reminder to take their key with them. :-?

Good info Gadget, do you know if the locking sounds apply to the gen 1s? I'd really like to have a sound when I lock my doors.

I don't but you could always try the process for the Gen II and see what happens:

To switch the 'beep' on and off. With the driver's door opened
1. Insert key into ignition then remove it
2. Within 5 seconds, insert the key again and turn to the "ON" position
3. Wait 10 seconds or longer then push the lock or unlock button on your remote (not on the door) twice within 10 seconds. You'll hear two beep sounds letting you know the program has been switched on or off.

The default is "beep" if you turn it off using the above method and decide you want it back for some reason go through the same process to toggle the sound to "on". The beep will be turned on (back to the default) if there's an interruption in battery power.

Cheers

My previous 2001 F-150 had a "YOU"RE NOT WEARING YOUR SEATBELT!!!" screaming intermittent dinger that I had the dealership program out. It was louder and more annoying than Bob Costas calling the World Series. I was told now that either the dealerships no longer programs it out for you or Ford removed that opt-out option all together. But, yeah, low lit dash boards and quiet are the two things I learned to live with regarding the Solara.

My GF's 2000 Camry LE has the beep when you lock/ unlock the doors with the key FOB. You should be able to turn that feature on in your Gen 1.

Heh, that was one of the things I hated when I drove the company's E-150 (I work at a delivery company)... Even when I'm just moving the car out of the dock. Yet, the things that Ford should improve on (like 5 different buttons for cruise control with no cancel button vs. joystick for other cars and old-school HVAC knobs that doesn't have a recirculation, so you'd have to turn it to "MAX A/C" on low fan when you're trying not to breathe skunk fart even if it's 60 degrees outside... Even in a 2007) isn't improved upon at all.
