i know the "thing" has something to do w/ the abs. not sure what it's called though. anyway, what's this orange/rust looking stuff on it? it's also on the brake booster.

If memory serves me correct, it's some sort of anti-corrosive, so that it doesn't rust. But i could be totaly wrong on this one.

I haven't looked at my car to see if they did this too.

It is most likely a marking paint to say those connectors have been tested for leaks and are ok. My first impression was a "tamper" mark factories put on all fitting. If the lines or paint is disturbed they can claim it was modified and won't cover warranty repairs. My Jeep has these on everything.
