Car rolls forward after put into park

Car rolls forward after put into park

Postby solarass » Sat Mar 24, 2007 1:18 pm

hey guys, i have an 04 v6 sle auto. the other day in my garage i noticed when i put it into park that the car rolled forward excessively, probably about 3/4 rotation of the tires i would say....what could this be? something not engaging correctly in the tranny? and when i would just shift from drive to reverse it would kind of shimmy

I think you may have thought the car rolled more than it actually did, but I could be wrong. Just in case, I'd suggest putting the emergency brake on when you park.

The drive to reverse thing...what do you mean by shimmy? Sometimes there's a little jerk when you shift from drive to reverse if you do it quicky.

Also...could be something wrong with your transmission :-(

^^What he said... I ALWAYS put my parking brakes on, manual or auto, incline or level ground... Especially even more now since I moved up into the hills in January. The problem could be in your parking pawls, which is a type of pin that somewhat secures your car in an emergency.

Constant use of the parking pawl only, especially when parking on an incline, or when I see some people putting the car in Park before it's at a complete stop, means that driveline components are kept constantly under stress, and can cause wear and eventual failure of the parking pawl.

It's a common misconception that it's a substitute for the e-brake, but it's actually more of a safety feature to keep your car from rolling downhill when it fails, except it's built in instead of setting it by hand (e.g. putting manual transmission in gear).

Replacement by a mechanic can be expensive, since it generally requires removing the transmission from the car.

well for me if im parked on a level surface i stop put it in neutral and let it settle a bit
then put it into park and then the handbrake and doesn't roll....
when i first started driving and whatnot i never used the hand brake and i got a roll sometimes. with the solara i always use the handbrake and never roll

ALWAYS use the E-brake when you park - regardless of A/T or Man.

ANd it actually puts lees stress on the A/T if you apply the handbrake before letting your foot off the brake, so the weight/stress of the car isn't all on the A/T in Park. ;)
