Why the hp and tq decrease from the 3.3L V6 from 06 to 07
I was curious about the "power drop" of the 3.3L V6 engine that 2007 Toyota cars show vs 2006 Toyota cars that use the 3.3L V6...I ask Toyota Canada...I had a good answer !
-----------------------------------------------------
QUESTION
Hi,
I will make long story short. The 3.3L V6 engine, since its introduction
in the 2002 Camry SE V6, offered a 225 hp and 240 pounds torque engine.
Those numbers are now at 210 hp and 220 pound torque for the same
engine. Do this engine had always offer 210 hp and 220 tq (like the 3.0L
V6 engine) and Toyota displayed falses specs (like 2003 Corolla) or if
Toyota had to put some restriction on the 3.3L V6 ??
------------------------------------------------------
ANSWER
Thank you for your recent correspondence.
The Society of Automotive Engineers revised Standard J1349, which sets forth the
protocol for testing horsepower and torque as of the first of this year. One
purpose of the change was to try to achieve more consistent ratings throughout
the industry. The State of California requires that advertised horsepower claims
be determined using the SAE Standard. The revision specifies that certain
equipment be installed on the engine and operating at the time of testing, as
well as the use of the manufacturer required grade of fuel during the test.
Presumably, all manufacturers will be using the revised Standard for future
tests. Toyota decided to retest most of its engines using the new protocol this
year. Consequently, the horsepower and torque ratings for many of our vehicles
declined this year. Any changes in horsepower and torque ratings based on the
implementation of the new testing protocol, however, have no impact on actual
engine performance.
We hope that this information helps and thank you for taking the time to write.
Sincerely,
