Engine ticking noise

Engine ticking noise

Postby jth877 » Fri Dec 02, 2005 10:36 am

I have about 600 miles on my new car, SE V6. The enigne is making a ticking sound I can hear in the passenger compartment. Under the hood the engine seems to run "ruff" and the noise is louder and the engine seems like it vibrating excessively. Sounds likes it's coming from the cam area on top of the engine. The ticking is annoying as hell and it didn't do it when I got the car. The ticking speed increases and decresses with the rpm. Does it hot or cold. Any ideas? I'm thinking the computer needs to be reset or reprogrammed (timing). The dealer says it probably nothing or "normal" and didn't even want to look at. Also, does the "throttle lag" TSB TC006-05 effect 2006's? It seems to have a lag problem.

if you think there is a problem, just bring it back to dealer claim for warranty.

I agree, you basically still have a new car. Take it to the dealer and have them fix this problem for you under warranty.

Also, I don't believe that TSB TC006-05 effects 2006's. Your ECU should have the updated software from the factory.

I am taking to the dealer, but I thought it would be a good idea to see if there was any more info on a possible cause. Dealer service is terrible no matter where you go or what car you own. They don't like to admit to any problems with their vehicles and think everyone is "car stupid". To get them to admit the car is not running right is a great achievement, to get them fix something is a miracle. I can rebuild a jeep/chy 4.0, but this computer stuff has me extremely nervous. I'm going to tell them to reset the ECU memory anyway so it can learn more aggresive driving. I drove this first 600 miles like a grandma.

I had a similar problem, but the clicking did not intensify with higher RPMs. The clicking was caused by the VSV for EVAP, and it's part of the design. Incidentally I haven't heard the clicking in a long time now. Here's the previous thread:

Don't be so paranoid. It could also be the Cam Rockers... those things are sometimes noisy on most Japanese cars.

With VVT-i, a timing issue would cause major performance issues... not a ticking sound. If you want to check yourself, go to another dealer and get a test drive to see if you hear it. If not, take it in. Side note: With the cover on, everything sounds like it's coming from that area. Sounds like a job for the screwdriver stethescope! Old school baby!

Update-

Dealer reported the tapping sound was normal. Tech said all of these engines have a tap/ticking sound that you can hear inside the passenger area! I'm making them pull out another v6 solara on the lot tomorrow and show me they sound the same. I know it's BS, now I have to call toyota directly to report a lying dealership.

Picked up the car and the service manager had another v6 solara there, running. Mine was obviously more loud than the other car, but they still acted like there was nothing wrong. It took 30min. for them to admit something was making noise. Told me to come back after my first oil change if it still made the noise. This is nothing more than a brush off tactic so I won't return the car or call toyota and tell them about the crappy service. I called toyota anyway and made a case. They have 3 days to act on the issue.

Toyota of Clifton Park, NY is the dealership-

*Update*

Tried to go to work this AM. Guess what? Car won't go into 2nd gear.
Wait for a tow out of my apartment parking lot. 736miles, what a lemon.

*Update*

#1 shift solenoid is bad. Never buying a toyota again! I thought ford was bad, holly crap! They ignored the valve tapping problem again. One more time not fixing it and it has to get taken back as a lemon according to NY state. Toyota is not what they used to be. Probably because the cars are being made in the US now. My 91 celica GT was a indestructable tank. That car took crap that no car should have to and drove like new 6 years later when traded.
