what kind of solder was used?

i've never soldered anything before, and the last time i looked into soldering....there were various spec levels...but this was for a computer circuit board...not sure what i'll need for splicing wires.

or can i go to home depot and just grab the first soldering iron i see?

I used 60/40 PB solder you can use any iron in ~30w range make sure to tin the tip first and watch some video on youtube
