On your passenger side dash there's a round stuff that looks like a space shuttle, pop it up and disconnect it.

??
for gen 1's the hi/low uses only one ballast but when you trigger the hi beam switch, it'll move this magnetic strip inside the bulb which will focus and make it seem brighter.

you can see how it slides and stuff.

But if you just get the low beam ones then when you trigger the hi beam it'll just turn off your low beam thats all.

some advantage with hi/lo (this is my current setup)
you can sorta flash a person behind or ahead of you
focused beam ahead of you for better view of the road.

disadvantages:
hi beam isn't really effective unless you have projectors
hi beam will hot or dead spots unless you spend the day adjusting your headlights.
requires this longass harness that goes from one side to the other side so that it'll get juice to activate the hi beam
whereas the lo beam will just have their own ballast on each side.

hopes this answers your question and help you a bit!
