EGR tube broke off of my rear OBX header

EGR tube broke off of my rear OBX header

Postby SirThomas88 » Fri Jun 04, 2010 7:09 pm

Note: I accidentally posted this outside the Gen 1 forum so I am reposting it here.

I just read a post by hskrsolara where the same thing happened to him.

A couple weeks ago the EGR tube broke off of my rear header (OBX) right at the weld. Then a few days later a good inch of it snapped off again while I was driving.

I'm assuming a combination of the flange not lining up right and the vibration of the header hitting the frame of my car when I gas it in reverse had something to do with it.

Anyone have any suggestions as far as how to fix it? I'd just seal it up, but I want a working EGR for when emissions time comes.

I have some exhaust tape I bought from Advanced Auto or Auto Zone that is supposed to mend holes in exhaust, but I'm not sure how reliable it is that close to the engine (melt or catch fire?), or if it would cause problems when I get ready to do more permanent repairs on it (get in the way of welding?). Hskrsolara mentioned that he attached a high-temp silicone hose. Not sure how that would hold up either, but I wouldn't mind replacing it every month or so if it works well enough.
i
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I did write to OBX today. Still waiting for a response.

I would go the route of the high temp silicone. put the clamps in a place that is easy to get to, so if it fails again it is an easy fix. Mine seems to be holding fine for now, we'll see how it lasts on the dyno, hopefully next week (methanol injection is going on).

I kinda have the same problem with my egr tube. Where would you find this type of hose at? I have already checked all the local auto stores but the most they have is heater hose.

Thanks hskrsolara for your suggestion. I'd really like to hear how it holds up so please def give us an update!

I came up with an idea earlier today. Since we don't need that EGR pipe except for emissions, what I plan to do is plug up the hole in the header with exhaust repair kit stuff they sell at auto stores and use a block off plate for the port on the engine block.

Then, when emissions time comes, I can unplug the 02 Sensor for my AFR Gauge from it's bunghole (which is only about a foot further downstream) and run a high-temp hose from the block to the bung.

I think this might be a better option for me because this way I wont have to drop the rear header and get a small bung/pipe section welded to the hole to attach the hose to. Also I don't have to worry about the silicone hose failing over time. I only need to attach it once every two years.

I have a hole somewhere in my JPP exhaust. I have to get under the car and see if it's in the headers, y-pipe or it could be the EGR tube.

I've used Seafoam to help locate exhaust leaks. If you can't find it, try Seafoam.

Have you called them and tried to get a replacement.
The same thing happened to me with my JPP's. JPP made up a new one and sent it off free of charge. They said it was most likely caused by a broken rear mount. I parted out the car and never really looked into it.
I know that you have OBX. Let's see if they stand behind their product as well.

I did write to them about two weeks ago but haven't heard back... I'd call them but they don't list a number. I'll probably try to write again in a couple weeks.

In the meantime I patched up the EGR hole on my back header with some stuff I bought from an auto parts store. I used the liquid stuff that you spread over the mesh cloth. Then I applied this exhaust tape stuff over it. So far seems to be holding up. It's only been a couple days though.

I have what's left from an old tube that broke. The tube broke so all I have is the mounting point plates. It's for the pipe that goes from the header to the egr cooler. They are pretty thick but you would need to close the hole where the tube would be.

I am not trying to thread jack, I just picked up a set of EGR block off plates for 20 bucks.
