Clutch & Flywheel Advice for Boosted Applications

CLUTCH RELATED:
My OEM clutch doesn't seem to hold 6 psi and I will need to buy another one SOON. I want something strong enough to hold down the power but smooth enough or as close to an OEM feel since I'm stuck in NYC traffic more often than not. Whats the difference between these and which one would be best for my application?
ACT Modified Street Clutch Disc 3.0L V6 (ACT-2000604)
ACT XTreme 4-Pad Solid-Center Race Clutch 3.0L V6 (ACT-4236007)
ACT XTreme 6-Pad Solid-Center Race Clutch 3.0L V6 (ACT-6236007)
Any other recommendations on brands?

FLYWHEEL RELATED:
I was looking at the aftermarket upgrade list and searched for the flywheel on the Fidanza site but it says its for the 3.3L Solara (99-02) which is weird. Can anyone confirm if this is the correct flywheel for our Solara's? Any other options?

ya its a misprint, bbq bob ordered one a couple weeks ago, i called and confirmed that 3.3 should be 3.0, so you should be good to go, as for a clutch im using the act street strip, with a f1 6 pad clutch disc, only been in the car a couple of months, i like it but it grabs, and use an oem throw out bearing, the after market ones are cheesy............ :drinking:

using the ACT modified street clutch w/ the fidanza flywheel....both got from ebay, both running great. Granted its only been in for about a month or so, but still plenty there for when I up'd my psi from 6 to 7. Clutch feel is stiffer than OEM, but its not extremely stiff where traffic would be a problem.

And x2 on the throw-out bearing. I didn't use the one that came with the ACT setup since I've heard horror stories. Go to a dealership and buy one, only around $30 bucks.

I have a clutchmasters stage 3 (FX300 segmented kevlar) and a fidanza, and am about to replace the clutch with another of the same. it lasted about 70k miles or so.

you won't find one listed for camry or solara - look for early 90's mr2 turbo. yes, it fits without modification.

here's the guy i got mine from (actually craig and i bought ours from him at the same time to get a little discount) http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... &viewitem=

the thing craig was most thrilled about was that unlike the exedy, the CM came with the proper alignment tool ;)

i do NOT recommend ACT if you intend to do any track racing (actual lapping, not drag racing). the ACT was ok on the street and strip, but after a few hot laps, the disk started to expand or something, and it was making it near impossible to shift gears - it was as if i wasn't pushing in the clutch all the way, even though i was jamming it into the carpet.

i've not had any issues with the throwout/release bearing that came with the CM clutch, and i plan to use the new one that came with this new clutch kit as well.

fyi - i'm running 7.5psi.

I had an ACT street clutch with Fidanza flywheel as well and loved it- no complaints! Clutch pedal feel was firmer than stock but still really chill, great for traffic jams, no chatter, always grabbed hard even at 6 psi.

I've been hearing some good things about Competition clutches but they only make clutches for the MR2. I'm pretty sure one is compatible with the V6 Solara but can anyone please confirm which one. Click the link for the list of clutches. I want a 6 puck stage 2 clutch. Thanks in advance for any help you guys can offer.

+2 for clutch masters. I have the stage 2 full-kevlar disc at 6psi and love it paired with the fidanza. I honestly can't tell the difference from stock, but it holds perfectly. I also haven't had any problems with the CM throwout bearing.

well based on the fact that my clutch was originally intended for mr2 turbo, i think it's safe to say that pretty much any standard type clutch kit (for an mr2 turbo) will work for us. Obviously the flywheel-and-clutch combo kits (especially the multidisk ones from CM like their FX600 series) won't work because the flywheel center bolt pattern is different.

check this article:
http://www.americanmuscle.com/choosing-clutch.html

sure, it's about mustangs, but clutch material is clutch material. a very good read. that's why i decided against an fx400 6-puck even though it would have been cheaper. my car is a daily driver, and i really don't want to deal with shuddering and harsh engagement, ESPECIALLY when i have my daughter in the back seat - she's only 4 months old!

i am very happy with my CM stage 3. even my wife can drive it without any real trouble, and she's still a rookie when it comes to driving stick.

i have not gotten to fully test out my fidanza/clutchmasters setup. but i can say just driving it around the neighborhood, it feels smooth. not hard to drive at all. oh yea and with clutchmasters you get the right alignment tool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

still having good luck with my Spec 2+ and fidanza. Although, the fidanza does make the car a bit tougher on the restarts and launches.

lol mongoloid. screw those trendy "hybrid" or "custom" terms. sounds better than "hodge-podge" too hehe

hey if its reliable and gets the job done then who the hell cares, especially since you can't even SEE it when it's assembled!

I have 5.5 boost and the clutch is Clutchmasters stage 2 with Kevlar disc (not segmented) and pressure plate that has more clamping power. I have had this set up fot the last 60K miles with no problems. The kit is not listed on the web site for *Camry*, but it's the same as the MR2 Turbo.

We use SPEC clutches and flywheels on a lot of our drift cars and local street cars.

Anyone who may be interested in a SPEC clutch, please feel free to contact us by phone and I'd be happy to chat with you directly!
