What Does it Take? 1mz/ 3mz Hybrid

Postby 99BlackSandv6 » Sun Aug 30, 2009 10:21 pm

So what exactly does it take to do a 1mz/ 3mz hybrid? Other than the obvious short block swap, what other mods are needed to pull off this swap? I know only a few guys have done it and I could have done some PMs but I figured I would put this as an open thread to help anybody interested in doing this.

Help me out experts! What does it take? :)

Thanks in advance,

Ben

i think PMs are in order if you really want to know, although it would be nice to have the basic info available in a thread that most likely no one will search for...

Yeah, as the old addage goes, "There is no replacement for displacement." although boost is also considered to be the great equalizer. Basically, I am going to keep this car as long as I can, and my thinking is that if I can put a new block in it and freshen up the engine, while also getting a little more power, that would be beneficial to my 500,000 mile goal. Plus I have a possible source for cheap short blocks with ZERO miles, and it would be a Sweet mod. I would like to make a healthy amount of NA hp and I need displacement to do that. It was just an idea.

What does the Comp. Ratio get bumped to, 1mz is 10.5/ 1 is this going to make the hybrid more like 11-11.5/ 1?

Right... so why not just do a straight 3mz swap? Are there parts on the 1mz that are better?

3mz is vvt-i so in order to do the full swap lots of wiring not only that but the 3mz also uses a Drive by wire throttle which makes the swap even more difficult, and with a full 3mz swap you cant trd s/c it.

So would that do the trick? Expensive but not as bad as I thought...

Inverted, all you need is the short block, meaning everything below the heads. Gabe PM'd me and said that all it takes is the 3mz short black, and head gaskets, and some machining to reroute the oil from the block to work with the 1mz heads. Its simple stuff really, he said he can mod the block and have it ready to swap for about $1400.

That's not bad at all... I can definitely see the draw to doing this now. Would want to use higher than 87 octane to run this I presume?
