Performance Brake Pads - Hawk / Porterfield

Performance Brake Pads - Hawk / Porterfield

Postby boiphil » Sun Jul 05, 2009 11:11 pm

I've already searched and have concluded most people agree stock toyota pads are the best for 90% of the people out there. However I've seen a few people mention they have had great experiences with Hawk HPS or Porterfield (Didn't mention what specific porterfield model they were running).

I'm about to do front pads (they're wearing down) and with the larger wheels and tires sometimes it feels like the pads fade when coming to a rapid stop from higher speeds.

Anyone with Porterfields or Hawk pads on a V6 Solara have anything to say about them? I don't really care about dust or spending a bit extra (the Porterfield R4's at $200+ are a bit steep, but their street pads R4-S are in line with everythin else I've been looking at). Ideally I'd like for them not to need a ton of warm-up before being functional, but one or two minor stops to get them to temp should be fine.

Any thoughts?

Hawk HPS or EBC Green Pads are my personal recommendations.

I say Hawk HPS, and do the 1992 - 1996 ES300 twin piston caliper swap.
That setup will be wonders for your brakin' power.

I am currently using Hawk HPS in front and EBC Redstuff in back. Hawk pads are great. They have good grip, low dust, and gentle on the rotors. The same goes for EBC redstuff. I know many people here like the Greenstuff but speaking from personal experience I thought they were way too dusty since they are carbon based instead of ceramic based like the Redstuff. If I didn't wash my wheels every week then the Greenstuff pads would leave a thick black layer of dust on them. I had the Greenstuff in the rear so the back wheels would actually be significantly dirtier looking than the front wheels. Switching to Redstuff solved my problem.

I've had EBC green, red and porterfield.

of the three, green bit the most when i braked. but the heat generated from canyon runs baked the brake fluid and had to move to dot4 after flushing the system.

I've run hawk hp plus on the fronts of my 99 camry and 90 corolla and they stopped great. With hard stops I'd say I had to replace rotors after 30k miles or so, but still had half the pad life left.

I had HPS all the way around on my ae86 when I bought it and felt they left more to be desired so went with carbotech and LOVE them. I've never ran into fade conditions with all the back roading and autocrossing I do.

Put carbotechs on my camry after doing the twin piston caliper upgrade. Stops great but not sure if its the pad or larger caliper or comb. of the two but actually prob. too much brake now. Basically, the car nose dives on really hard stops. I think some better rubber would help out and for the nose diving I'm gonna try switching to carbotechs in the rear and doing the 3rd gen v6 wagon upgrade and hopefully smooth out the brake bias.
