DIY Intake Heat Wrap: $10

I saw this tutorial while googling, I see a few of you have wrapped your intakes from recent pics. Is it worth the $10 bucks? I really don't mind the aesthetics, my ride is beat up anyway. :)

Depends on what the tube is made off.
Aluminum: definitely wrap it.
Steel: less important.
ABS, CF. FB: very little effect.

The injen is aluminum.
ABS = Plastic, CF = Carbon Fiber ( I think he was referring to that ) and I've no idea what he means by FB.

IMO It looks so ugly I wouldnt wrap unless it gave me significant power increase

Perhaps consider ceramic coating?

I always thought that intake heat wraps were a waste of money. Unless your intake is passing through the middle of your cylinder block and is 25 feet long I don't see the advantage. I'm no thermodynamic physicist but wouldn't wrapping the intake keep warm air warm inside your intake if it's hot outside? I mean after all you're insulating it, right?

I posted here recently that somone actually measured the intake air before and after wrapping in thermal protection. They got at least 15 degree drop. The aluminum pipe absorbs a LOT on ambient heat under the hood and transmits it to the intake air.

i used fiberglass header wrap from ebay rated 1800 deg then covered it with a heat reflective tape rated @ 900 deg from pepboys with this combo i was able to strech the header wrap around the pipe to get a nice fit and then wrapped it with the reflective tape witch is like very thick aluminum foil with a sticky backing that molds to anything you put it on Image

You don't have to cover the whole thing for it to help - anything you do is better (obviously, if it passes close to the head, radiator tank etc. that section should get thicker cover).

Reason: underhood air is wash from the radiator and it's 195° + whatever the exhaust throws off. Outside air won't go above 110° unless it's July 4th in Amarillo.
