Got my front underbody brace installed

Got my front underbody brace installed

So got my Ultra Racing underbody bar installed. It was a slight pain, as had to start with just starting the outside bolts, then moved to the insides and had to jack the bar up with the jack a bit to help get it flush enough for those ones to start. Finally though it got installed. I noticed a significant difference. It was wet out today and when I meshed the throttle at low speeds, wheel hop was greatly reduced and I seemed to have slightly better control. Composure over rough surfaces is also much better and confidence inspiring. Haven't really had a chance to push it hard in turns just because it's rained all day.

However, when going to install the rears, ran into a problem. The control arm bolts that have to removed are stuck, and we had nothing with decent leverage to break em loose. Gonna try spraying them throughout the week and get a breaker bar and do it at my place. One question though, will the stock bolts really fit through the arms? It looks like the smaller bolt on the outsides will go through, but that the washers might not fit. Anyone able to give insight into this?

Regarding the rear braces, TRDSleeper should chime in with his take on the install, since he's the only SG that I'm aware of that has them on (and was the one to discover that they fir in the first place!).

And congrats on getting the front brace. I love mine a lot, just thinking of getting it re-powder coated a different color if the price is right. Drive carefully over those steep speed bumps, the descend is killer and the bang/scrape is loud unless you brake right. It's an art, but well worth the stability afforded by the bar during spirited driving.

TMMK, are you referring to the smaller outside nuts that Ultra Racing included with the rear braces? Here's a pic I took of the nuts I used for my installation:

Image

The nut on the left is the OEM one, which for some reason is permanently stuck to the washer. The separate nut and washer in the middle is the one provided by Ultra Racing. The nut on the right is the one I bought from the auto parts store, size 14mm M10-1.25.

The Ultra Racing washer is about the same size as the OEM but the nut is way too small and is not flanged so it will not hold adequately. Just buy the bigger flanged nut I mentioned above to use with the UR washer and you should be good to go. As for the two bigger middle nuts attached to the suspension arms, I had to use a breaker bar to get it loose and torqueing it back in with a torque wrench was hell too, 134 lb.-ft was not easy.

TRDSleeper, thank you much. I didn't get any nuts or washers with mine, but not a huge deal. Least I know what nuts to go with. I'll try to message Mike to see if he knows what size washer it was they use and I'm guessing you reused the stock nuts on the inside (end towards the center of the car)?

No problem. Yes, I reused the OEM nuts at the center of the car. They seem to hold adequately so I figured no need to change them, only the outside nuts needed improvement.
