Wheel boot/locks?

Wheel boot/locks?

Postby LatinDragonXJC » Sun Oct 12, 2008 1:51 pm

Finally bought some used wheels......now I have to make sure they don't roll off on me in someone else hands.

I did some research and came up with either McGard or Gorilla locking bolts (at least 4 is the consensus on here, and all 20 are overkill).

But my next step is getting a wheel boot/lock device. Do any of you have these on your wheels? I live next to the once car theft capital of the US, and I need to slow down thieves a bit.

So far I'm split between these two manufacturers........

LOL that's where I'm from, and it seems like no one has bought one these. They are fairly common in my city. An alarm is a joke here, it's a city, there's so many of them, that no one cares if it goes off or not. And most thieves break into the engine compartment and rip the alarm horn out. My 'Lara almost got stolen once by a tow truck lol 4 in the morning in front of my house.....luckily my neighbor was up and scared the guy away.

No one has experience with any of these?

^ nope, if a thief really wants your car they will get it now matter what security you have. even it means a fender might get messed up

^^Exactly why I gave my examples, this is how you slow down thieves here. I know car thieves personally, I know most of their methods, but they say this is the boot biggest headache. Many avoid dealing with taking the car if it has one.

^ go for it. invest in a alarm system with proximity sensors that will notify you if anyone is near your car , and hide the alarm speaker and all the wiring

ur best bet, is to get low jack...

that boot would have come in no use if that Tow Truck wanted to take ur car....on the other hand the low jack would pinpoint the location for the cops.

btw, im in JC often....@ the white castle :-P

Not really, just overnight parking.

I've had that before, with two horns (1 dummy horn) and a pager. I live in an apartment building now, I wouldn't hear my car depending on where it's parked (sometimes 1-3 blocks away). Parking is horrible around here.

This boot serves more as a visual deterrent. So I don't have to bother with Lojack (car is already taken) and dealing with damages and insurance.

Thanks for all your input, I think I'ma go with the more expensive one (Alpha Lock), seems like I could definitely break into the Tire Claw myself.

Cute. That's why I mentioned the locking bolts (McGard/Gorilla). The boot is to prevent movement of the vehicle.

Here's a good quote from another board to further my point about Lo Jack. Except for the alarm part, my car is almost never in sight when parked overnight.

LoJack's working principal relies on your local police department... partially. If your local PD has little or no experience with LoJack recovery and equipment, don't expect fast response times.

Even still, fast response times don't matter: LoJack advertises that the average LoJack-equipped vehicle is recovered within 2-3 hours. Considering that the Solara comes with an engine immobilizer, only professional thieves have the know-how to disable that, OR the balls to put your car on a flatbed truck and drive away. And pro thieves will steal your car and strip it of all parts in UNDER ONE HOUR. What LoJack doesn't tell you is that most of the "recovered" vehicles are found stripped to the bone.

The best theft-deterrent to buy is a two-way pager alarm, in combination with a lead pipe. These bad boys will alert you via the keychain fob if your alarm is activated, so you can quickly run back to your car and beat the hijackers with the aforementioned lead pipe.
